Catherine Tekakwitha wurde 1656 in Ossernenon geboren, das Teil des Irokesen-Konf\u00f6deration<\/a>. Die Hauptstadt dieses V\u00f6lkerbundes befand sich im heutigen Staat New York. Catherine war die Tochter eines Mohawk-H\u00e4uptlings und einer Algonquin-Indianerin (aus Ostkanada). Ihre Mutter war Christin, aber ihr Vater war Heide, so dass die junge Indianerin erst mit achtzehn Jahren zum Glauben kam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Im Alter von vier Jahren verlor Catherine ihre Eltern und einen Bruder durch Pocken. Auch sie erkrankte an der Krankheit, \u00fcberlebte aber. Ihr Gesicht war jedoch vernarbt und sie hatte f\u00fcr den Rest ihres Lebens Probleme mit dem Sehen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00dcber seine Kindheit und Jugendzeit ist wenig bekannt. Es gibt Aufzeichnungen \u00fcber seine Taufe, als er zwanzig Jahre alt war, zwei Jahre nachdem er zum Glauben gekommen war. Er empfing das Sakrament von franz\u00f6sischen Jesuitenmissionaren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nachdem er den katholischen Glauben angenommen hatte, wurde er von seiner Familie abgelehnt und misshandelt. Die Situation wurde so extrem, dass er 1677 aus seinem Dorf fliehen und 320 Kilometer zu Fu\u00df in ein christliches Dorf in Montreal (Kanada) gehen musste. Dort entwickelte er eine gro\u00dfe Liebe f\u00fcr die Eucharistie<\/a> und ein bu\u00dffertiges Leben zu Gunsten ihres Herkunftsvolkes, das sie abgelehnt hatte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zwei Jahre sp\u00e4ter, im Jahr 1679, legte er im Alter von 23 Jahren ein Keuschheitsgel\u00fcbde ab. Er starb nur zw\u00f6lf Monate sp\u00e4ter in Caughnawag, in der N\u00e4he von Quebec. Ihre letzten Worte sollen \"Jesus, ich liebe dich\" gewesen sein.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nach ihrem Tod begann man sie zu verehren und gab ihr den Spitznamen \"Lilie der Mohikaner\". Papst Pius XII. erkl\u00e4rte sie 1943 f\u00fcr verehrungsw\u00fcrdig. Ihre Seligsprechung durch Johannes Paul II. erfolgte im Jahr 1980. Schlie\u00dflich war es Benedikt XVI., der Katharina Tekakwitha am 21. Oktober 2012 heiligsprach.<\/p>\n\n\n
