Januar 1838 wurde die heilige Mariana Cope im Gro\u00dfherzogtum Hessen (heute Deutschland) geboren. Ihr Geburtsname war Barbara, nach ihrer Mutter. Als sie erst ein Jahr alt war, zog ihre Familie in die Vereinigten Staaten, in den Staat New York. Um sich besser integrieren zu k\u00f6nnen, \u00e4nderten sie ihren urspr\u00fcnglichen Nachnamen \"Kobb\" in \"Cope\". Au\u00dferdem wurde der Vater der Familie US-Staatsb\u00fcrger, so dass auch die Kinder US-B\u00fcrger wurden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In New York erhielt Mariana eine katholische Erziehung in einer kirchlichen Schule. Im Alter von zehn Jahren ging sie zur ersten heiligen Kommunion und einige Jahre sp\u00e4ter, als Teenager, ging sie in einer Fabrik arbeiten, um ihre Eltern finanziell zu unterst\u00fctzen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Von Barbara zu Mariana Cope<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Schon in jungen Jahren \u00e4u\u00dferte die zuk\u00fcnftige Heilige den Wunsch, ins Kloster einzutreten, aber die schwierige Situation ihrer Familie zwang sie, den Eintritt ins Ordensleben zu verschieben.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sie wartete einige Zeit geduldig, bis Cope im Alter von 24 Jahren beschloss, alles zu verlassen. Im Jahr 1860 legte sie ihre Profess als Schwester der <a href=\"https:\/\/www.franciscanos.org\/santoral\/marianacope.htm\">Dritter franziskanischer Orden<\/a> und \u00e4nderte ihren Namen von Barbara in Mariana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Die Ordensgemeinschaft, der sie sich anschloss, er\u00f6ffnete Krankenh\u00e4user in New York. Dort sorgte die Heilige daf\u00fcr, dass sie sich um alle Bed\u00fcrftigen k\u00fcmmerte. Dank ihres entschlossenen Charakters wurde sie 1877 und 1881 zur Provinzialin gew\u00e4hlt. Doch schon bald verlie\u00df sie dieses Amt, als sie eine andere Berufung erhielt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00dcbertragung nach Hawaii<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Der K\u00f6nig von Hawaii bat um Hilfe bei der Versorgung der Leprakranken auf den Inseln. Mariana verlie\u00df den Staat New York und zog nach Molokai. Dort arbeitete sie als Krankenschwester in einem Pflegeheim. Ihr Engagement war so gro\u00df, dass sie mit den Patienten auf der Insel Kalaupapa in Isolation lebte, als dort eine Leprakolonie eingerichtet wurde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Die heilige Mariana Cope k\u00fcmmerte sich nicht nur um die Gesundheit der Kranken, sondern f\u00f6rderte auch den Bau einer Kirche und einer Schule f\u00fcr die Kinder der Gegend. Sie organisierte auch eine W\u00e4scherei f\u00fcr Frauen und einen Chor, damit die Menschen ihre Zeit mit n\u00fctzlichen T\u00e4tigkeiten verbringen konnten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trotz der Forderung, dass Mariana 1889 in die Vereinigten Staaten auswandern sollte, beschloss sie, in Hawaii zu bleiben, um sich um die Bewohner der Anstalt zu k\u00fcmmern. Sie blieb standhaft in ihrer Entscheidung und starb am 9.
