Am 26. November 1858 bekamen ein wohlhabender Bankier und seine Frau in Philadelphia, USA, ein kleines M\u00e4dchen. An diesem Tag konnten sie noch nicht ahnen, dass dieses M\u00e4dchen Jahre sp\u00e4ter die heilige Katharina Maria Drexel werden w\u00fcrde, die vom Heiligen Stuhl heiliggesprochen wurde. Papst Johannes Paul II.<\/a> Was war so besonders am Leben dieser Frau?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Das Kind dieser wohlhabenden Familie lernte schon fr\u00fch die Bedeutung der Gro\u00dfz\u00fcgigkeit. Ihr Vater und seine zweite Frau (Katharinas Mutter starb kurz nach der Geburt der Heiligen) waren sehr aktiv in der karitativen Arbeit mit den Armen der Stadt. Katharina und ihre Schwestern wurden in die Arbeit ihrer Eltern einbezogen, w\u00e4hrend sie gleichzeitig im Glauben wuchsen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Als das Ehepaar nur wenige Jahre nach ihrer Heirat starb, erbte Catherine ein gro\u00dfes Verm\u00f6gen. Im Alter von 33 Jahren beschloss sie, die wohlt\u00e4tige Arbeit der Drexels fortzusetzen und ihr ganzes Geld und ihr Leben denjenigen zu widmen, die es am meisten brauchten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gr\u00fcnderin einer Kongregation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Bei einem Besuch in Rom bat sie Papst Leo XIII., mehr Missionare nach Amerika zu schicken, um den amerikanischen Indianern zu helfen. Der Papst fragte sie jedoch liebevoll, ob sie nicht selbst Missionarin werden wolle. Als sie in die Vereinigten Staaten zur\u00fcckkehrte, trat Katharina den Schwestern der N\u00e4chstenliebe bei.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kurz darauf, im Februar 1891, gr\u00fcndete sie ihre eigene Kongregation: die Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament for Indians and People of Color. Wie die Schwestern auf ihrer Website erkl\u00e4ren, besteht ihre Mission darin, \"die Botschaft des Evangeliums mit den Armen zu teilen, insbesondere mit den Schwarzen und den indigenen V\u00f6lkern, und alle Formen des Rassismus sowie andere tiefsitzende Ungerechtigkeiten in der heutigen Welt zu bek\u00e4mpfen\".<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Catherine Drexel war die Generaloberin der Kongregation bis 1937, als sie aus gesundheitlichen Gr\u00fcnden zur\u00fccktreten musste. Sie widmete all ihre Jahre an der Spitze der Ordensleute vom Allerheiligsten Sakrament der Gr\u00fcndung von Schulen f\u00fcr Indianer und Schwarze in verschiedenen Teilen des Landes. Sie wirkte auch bei der Er\u00f6ffnung von Universit\u00e4ten und der Gr\u00fcndung von Kl\u00f6stern mit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nach einem Herzinfarkt verschlechtert sich der Gesundheitszustand der heiligen Katharina. Sie zog sich zwanzig Jahre lang von der intensiven T\u00e4tigkeit der Kongregation zur\u00fcck und starb 1955 im Alter von 96 Jahren. F\u00fcnfundvierzig Jahre sp\u00e4ter wurde sie von Papst Johannes Paul II. selig gesprochen<\/a>. Der polnische Papst sagte \u00fcber die heilige Katharina Drexel, dass sie \"ein hervorragendes Beispiel f\u00fcr praktische N\u00e4chstenliebe und gro\u00dfz\u00fcgige Solidarit\u00e4t mit den am wenigsten Beg\u00fcnstigten\" sei.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Catalina Drexels aktuelles Verm\u00e4chtnis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

F\u00fcr ihre Arbeit erhielt Catherine Drexel zu Lebzeiten mehrere Auszeichnungen, darunter die DeSmet-Medaille, eine Medaille des Kolumbus-Ritterordens und eine Auszeichnung des Komitees der S\u00fcdkatholiken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Als Teil seines Verm\u00e4chtnisses ist die Xavier University Preparatory heute noch aktiv. Dar\u00fcber hinaus stehen viele Kirchen und Kapellen unter seinem besonderen Schutz und tragen seinen Namen, wie zum Beispiel mehrere Gemeinden in Florida, New Jersey oder Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n\n\n
