{"id":44902,"date":"2025-02-03T10:38:39","date_gmt":"2025-02-03T08:38:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/?p=44902"},"modified":"2025-11-28T14:14:43","modified_gmt":"2025-11-28T12:14:43","slug":"saint-of-the-day-saint-oscar-was-apostle-of-scandinavia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/en\/foco\/santo-del-dia-san-oscar-fue-apostol-de-escandinavia\/","title":{"rendered":"St. Oscar, Apostle of Scandinavia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saint Ansgarius (Oscar), a native of Corbie (France), was a great scholar who from a very young age studied with the Benedictines in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaticannews.va\/es\/santos\/02\/03\/s--ansgario--oscar---obispo-de-hamburgo-y-brema--apostol-de-la-e.html\">Abbey of Corbie<\/a>. While a monk, he was designated by Pope Gregory IV as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.santopedia.com\/santoral\/3-de-febrero\">legacy<\/a> for all the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/en\/focus\/erik-varden-interview-dei\/\">Scandinavian lands<\/a> of Northern Europe, proclaiming the Gospel in the <a href=\"https:\/\/misionerosdigitales.com\/celebraciones-santos\/san-oscar\/\">Denmark and Sweden<\/a>. At a very young age he was bishop of Hamburg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Years later, due to the push from the Vikings, he was forced to <a href=\"https:\/\/es.catholic.net\/op\/articulos\/34843\/oscar-ansgario-de-bremen-santo.html#google_vignette\">taking refuge in Bremen<\/a> where, as bishop, he spent the last years of his life working, according to some sources, on the edition of a Bible for the poor. Fragments of this ancient Bible are preserved in the cathedral of the city. St. Oscar died in the year 865, without having seen the dream of a profound <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/en\/focus\/a-swedish-catholic-parish-has-between-50-and-100-nationalities\/\">evangelization<\/a> of northern Europe, but with the joy of having sown the first seed of faith in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/en\/news\/interview-raimo-goyarrola\/\">those lands<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Church also celebrates today the <a href=\"https:\/\/valdemorillo.archimadrid.es\/vida-y-milagros-de-san-blas-obispo-y-martir\/\">patronage of St. Blaise<\/a> of otorhinolaryngologists and for throat ailments. It is because, according to tradition, he once saved the life of a child who had a fish bone stuck in his throat. In the 17th century, the bishop and martyr Saint Blaise enjoyed great popularity as a protector saint against illnesses, which is why he was depicted in the imagery of the <a href=\"https:\/\/catedraldeoviedo.com\/festividad-san-blas\/\">Oviedo Cathedral<\/a>.
