{"id":49543,"date":"2025-06-09T09:49:02","date_gmt":"2025-06-09T07:49:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/?p=49543"},"modified":"2025-06-11T14:29:16","modified_gmt":"2025-06-11T12:29:16","slug":"abortion-euthanasia-chilean-politics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/en\/actualidad\/aborto-eutanasia-politica-chilena\/","title":{"rendered":"Abortion and euthanasia at the forefront of Chilean politics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the first week of June, the government of President Gabriel Boric sent to the Chilean Congress a bill for free abortion -without grounds- up to the 14th week of pregnancy. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/en\/news\/culture\/elvira-casas-acompanamiento-acompanamiento-en-el-embarazo\/\">pregnancy<\/a>. The presidents of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate -both from the opposition- declared that it is not their intention to put them on the political agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, 20 opposition senators signed a letter rejecting the bill and other members of the government coalition have expressed their opposition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Episcopal Conference of Chile issued a statement rejecting this project. \"We deeply regret these initiatives, which attack the sacred and inviolable value of human life. We insist that human life, from conception to natural death, possesses a dignity that must always be protected and promoted.\" The same has been done by the Evangelical and Anglican communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the above, the Government has given immediate urgency to a bill on euthanasia that has been sleeping in Congress since 2011 and has been reformulated several times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bill basically creates the right to voluntarily opt to receive medical assistance for the purpose of hastening death in case of terminal and incurable illness, in cases where the patient has a disease, illness or advanced and irreversible diminution of his capacities which causes him persistent and intolerable physical suffering and which cannot be alleviated under conditions he deems acceptable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both issues were in the government program of <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gabriel_Boric\">Gabriel Boric<\/a>The President of the Republic, who wants to meet with his constituents before the next presidential election in November 2025.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>En la primera semana de junio el gobierno del Presidente Gabriel Boric envi\u00f3 al Congreso chileno un proyecto de aborto libre -sin causales- hasta la 14\u00aa semana de embarazo.
