Antonio Jos\u00e9 Cavanilles (Valencia, 1745 \u2013 Madrid, 1804) was a Spanish naturalist, botanist, and priest, considered one of the most prominent scientists of the Enlightenment in Spain. His life and work constitute a bridge between the humanist tradition and modern scientific rigor applied to the study of nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After completing his studies in his hometown, he earned a doctorate in Theology from the University of Valencia. Ordained a priest, he combined his religious vocation with a growing passion for the natural sciences. In 1777, he traveled to Paris as tutor to the son of the Duke of Infantado. There, he developed an interest in botany, learning the most advanced methods of the time in this science, including Linnaean classification. His first botanical work, Monadelphiae, classis dissertationes decem<\/em> (1785-1790), <\/em>Containing a description and classification of all species with mono-oleander flowers, it began its rise to fame in European botanical circles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n After the outbreak of the French Revolution in 1789, he had to return to Spain. His most influential work dates from this period., Icons and Descriptions Plantarum<\/em> (1791\u20131801), in which he described hundreds of species, many from America and the Philippines, collected through the scientific expeditions of the Spanish monarchy. This work placed him among the most prestigious European botanists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In 1791, King Charles IV commissioned him to "travel throughout Spain to examine the plants that grow there," and from there his Observations on the Natural History of the Kingdom of Valencia <\/em>(Madrid, 1795-1797), where beyond botany, he studied the geographical, social and economic aspects of this land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In 1801 he was appointed director of the Royal Botanical Garden of Madrid, an institution he revitalized with a strong boost to research and teaching, reinforcing its connection with overseas scientific expeditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Beyond botany, Cavanilles showed interest in modernizing production methods and the importance of science to the nation's prosperity.
