What should prevail in the formation of priests and laity in the Church, what matters more: study or the pastoral task? Or the two legs... These are frequent analyses that arise.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pope Leo XIV further clarified the matter at the official inauguration of the 2025-2026 academic year of the Pontifical Lateran University on November 14. A center that is often referred to as \u201cthe Pope's University,\u201d and which occupies \u201ca special place\u201d in his heart, as he has affirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cScientific research and research work are necessary.\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo truly serve the Church and the world,\u201d Pope Leo said, \u201cthe university must maintain the highest academic standards.<strong> <\/strong>Scientific excellence must be promoted, defended and developed\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSometimes we come across the idea that research and study are useless for real life, that what matters in the Church is pastoral practice rather than theological, biblical or legal preparation.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the risk lies in \u201cfalling into the temptation to simplify complex issues to avoid the burden of thought, with the danger that, even in pastoral action and its language, we may fall into banality, approximation or rigidity,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cWe need trained and competent laity and priests.\u201d.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cScientific research and research work are necessary. We need trained and competent lay people and priests. Therefore, I urge them not to lower their guard in scientific matters, but to pursue with passion the search for truth and to be closely involved with other sciences, with reality and with the problems and difficulties of society,\u201d he said in his <a href=\"https:\/\/press.vatican.va\/content\/salastampa\/it\/bollettino\/pubblico\/2025\/11\/14\/0867\/01553.html\">speech<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cCounteracting the risk of a cultural vacuum\u201d.\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Faith must be studied in a way that allows it to be expressed \u201cwithin today's cultural contexts and challenges,\u201d he said, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/en\/focus\/asitha-sriyantha\/\">these studies<\/a> are also a way of \u00abcounteracting the risk of the cultural vacuum that, in our time, is becoming more and more widespread\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The university's theology faculty, the Pope said, must find ways to highlight the \u00abbeauty and credibility\u00bb of the Christian faith \u00abso that it can appear as a fully human proposal, capable of transforming the lives of individuals and society, of bringing about prophetic changes in response to the tragedies and poverties of our time, and of encouraging the search for God.\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dialogue and respect<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything a Catholic university does<strong>,<\/strong> Pope Leo said, it must be done with dialogue, respect and with the goal of building a true community of brothers and sisters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That sense of fraternity, he said, is essential to counteract \u201cthe lure of individualism as the key to success in life.\u201d This has \u201cworrying consequences in all areas: people focus on self-promotion, the primacy of the ego is nurtured, cooperation is hindered. Prejudices and barriers towards others, especially those who are different, grow, responsibility in service is confused with solitary leadership and, in the end, misunderstandings and conflicts multiply.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the human and religious level, Pope Leo said, a Catholic university is called to promote the common good and to prepare students to contribute to the good of their churches and communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe goal of the educational and academic process must be to form people who, guided by the logic of gratuitousness and by a passion for truth and justice, can become builders of a new world, fraternal and in solidarity,\u201d he said. \u201cThe university can and must spread this culture, becoming a sign and expression of this new world and of the search for the common good.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u2013 Cindy Wooden, Ciudad del Vaticano, CNS A veces se habla de Papas m\u00e1s pastorales, o m\u00e1s intelectuales. \u00bfQu\u00e9 debe prevalecer en la formaci\u00f3n de sacerdotes y laicos en la Iglesia, qu\u00e9 importa m\u00e1s? \u00bfEl estudio, o la tarea pastoral?
