Kennedy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A perfect storm<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The elections, defined by analysts as \"a perfect storm,\" unfolded in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, with a <strong>very high turnout and a sharply divided electorate <\/strong>between support for the Democratic and Republican parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/20201116T1700-HEALTH-CORONAVIRUS-1009307-1024x723.jpg\" alt=\"donald trump\" class=\"wp-image-5564\" width=\"423\" height=\"299\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two candidates, aware that victory was not assured and that \"every vote counts,\" turned their attention to a constituency that is gaining weight in American society and employed their best strategies for <strong>attract the Catholic vote.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As stated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/09\/25\/us\/politics\/catholic-voters-trump-biden.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The New York Times in an article<\/a> published on September 26, \"<em>Joseph Biden's supporters emphasize his<strong> catholic faith and values<\/strong> while President Trump, with his Supreme Court nomination, operates in the realm of the culture war that he prefers to<\/em>\".<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The opposition of Trump, a Presbyterian, to assisted reproduction laws and abortion has won him the support of part of this electorate. Joe Biden, for his part, has no qualms about declaring himself a practicing Catholic and pointing out how his faith has helped him through the most difficult moments of his life. His position on abortion is, however, ambiguous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A growing minority<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/20201112T1345-POPE-BIDEN-CALL-1009220-1-1024x897.jpg\" alt=\"joe biden and pope francis\" class=\"wp-image-5566\" width=\"383\" height=\"335\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>There are about 70 million Catholics in the United States.<\/strong>. They are a growing minority, thanks in part to the <strong>presence of Latinos<\/strong>The majority of \"white\" Catholics, especially in the Northeast and Midwest, have leaned Republican and Hispanic Catholics have leaned Democratic. However, \"<em>Catholic faith-motivated voters are considered pendulum swingers because the Church's teachings on a wide range of social and economic issues do not clearly coincide with either the Republican or Democratic parties alone.<\/em>\", the NYT maintains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The US bishops' conference acknowledged Joe Biden's victory in a communiqu\u00e9 issued on November 9. Signed by its president, the Archbishop of Los Angeles, Jose Gomez, it recalled that \"<em><strong>Catholics have a special duty to be peacemakers<\/strong>to promote fraternity and mutual trust and to pray for a renewed spirit of true patriotism.<\/em>\". We will have to wait for the polls to find out which way the balance of this undecided minority has tipped on this occasion.
