The stories of Christians and Muslims helping each other in Lebanon when their villages were destroyed offer the lesson that \u201cperhaps we should be a little less fearful and look for ways to promote a genuine dialogue<\/a> and respect,\u201d the Pope told reporters on December 2 during his flight back to Rome from Lebanon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Often, fear of Muslims in the West is \u201cgenerated by people who oppose immigration and who try to exclude those who may be from another country, another religion, another race,\u201d he said. \u201cIn that sense, I would say we all need to work together.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pope Leo left Rome for Turkey on November 27 and traveled to Lebanon on November 30. Yesterday, on his way home from Beirut, he spent more than 25 minutes on the plane answering questions from journalists, which you can watch in full. here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In search of sustainable peace in the Middle East<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

After his repeated calls throughout the trip to end violence in the Middle East, violence that includes attacks on Israel by Hezbollah militants and attacks on Lebanon by Israel against the militants, Pope Leo, who was born in the United States, was asked if he would \u201cuse his connections\u201d with US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to promote peace in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI believe that sustainable peace is achievable,\u201d said the Pope. \u201cIn fact, I have already begun, on a small scale, some conversations with some leaders from the places you mentioned,\u201d he told the journalist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the Vatican's diplomatic efforts are mainly carried out \u201cbehind the scenes,\u201d he said. The important thing is that those involved in armed conflicts silence their weapons and sit down at the same table to negotiate peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ukraine: revisions to the initial plan <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On the issue of Ukraine and the peace plan proposed by US President Donald Trump, which was drawn up without input from European NATO members, Pope Leo said he was happy to see that revisions were already being made to the plan to include Europe's concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Venezuela: \u201ccalm the situation,\u201d dialogue<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When asked about the current tensions between Trump and Venezuelan President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro, Pope Leo said that the Vatican is in contact with \u201cthe bishops and the nuncio\u201d to try to find ways \u201cto calm the situation,\u201d especially since those who suffer most are the ordinary citizens of Venezuela.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, Pope Leo also pointed out that \u201cthe voices coming from the United States are changing,\u201d alternating between ultimatums to Maduro and occasional softening of rhetoric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don't know any more,\u201d said the Pope, but it is always better to seek the path of dialogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Promoting understanding and respect<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In response to another question about dialogue and friendship, Pope Leo said that his episcopal motto, \u201cIn Illo Uno Unum,\u201d literally \u201cIn the One, we are one,\u201d is an obvious reference to the unity found in faith in Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it is also \u201can invitation to all of us and to others to say: \u2018The more we can promote authentic unity and understanding, respect, and human relationships\u2014that is, friendship and dialogue in the world\u2014the greater the possibility that we will put aside the weapons of war,\u2019\u201d said the Pope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When people learn to \u201clet go of the mistrust, hatred, and animosity that has so often been created,\u201d he said, \u201cwe will find ways to unite and we will be able to promote authentic peace and justice.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conclave: \u201cLord, You are in charge. Everything is in God's hands.\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Regarding the conclave that elected him on May 8, the Pope said that he maintains \u201cvery strict\u201d secrecy regarding the electoral process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The day before the conclave began, he said, a journalist stopped him on the street and asked him what he thought about people saying he was a candidate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI simply said, \u2018Everything is in God's hands,\u2019 and I believe that deeply,\u00bb said the Pope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pope Leo XIII said that those who want to understand him should read the book \u201cThe Practice of the Presence of God\u201d by an author known simply as Brother Lorenzo. This book has influenced his spirituality for years, he said. The premise is: \u201cone simply surrenders one's life to the Lord and allows Him to guide.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAmidst great challenges, living in Peru during years of terrorism, being called to serve in places I never thought I would be called to serve, I trust in God,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen I saw how things were going in the conclave,\u201d he said, \u00abI took a deep breath. I said, \u201dHere we go, Lord. You are in charge and guide the way.\u2018\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People \u00abwant to see Jesus Christ.\u201d<\/strong> and \u201ca messenger of peace\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As for the crowds that gather in Rome and participate in the journey, Pope Leo said he knows they come to see him, \u201cbut I say to myself: \u2018They are here because they want to see Jesus Christ and they want to see a messenger of peace.\u2019\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The enthusiasm, especially among young people, \u201cis impressive,\u201d he said, \u201cand I just hope I never tire of appreciating it.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your next trip, Africa, including Algeria<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Regarding future papal trips, he said that nothing is \u201ccertain\u201d yet, but he hopes that his next trip will be to Africa, including Algeria, where St. Augustine served as bishop and where he is still \u201chighly respected as a son of the nation.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
