Photo taken on June 30, 2019 (@CNS\/courtesy of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Archeology as \u201ctheology of the senses\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most innovative concepts in the letter is the definition of Christian archaeology as a \u201ctheology of the senses,\u201d which \u201ceducates in this sensitivity\u201d and \u201cteaches that nothing touched by faith is insignificant.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cChristian theology cannot be fully understood without an understanding of the places and material traces that bear witness to the faith of the early centuries,\u201d  says the Pontiff, quoting the words of the evangelist John: \u201cWhat we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have contemplated and what we have touched with our hands concerning the Word of Life.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Paradigm shift<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I believe that this is the most revolutionary and significant idea in Leo XIV's apostolic letter: the concept of Christian archaeology as a \u201cschool of incarnation\u201d and \u201ctheology of the senses.\u201d A paradigm shift is being proposed in how theological knowledge is understood.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traditionally, archaeology has been viewed as an auxiliary discipline, useful but not essential. In this document, the Pope elevates it to the rank of an indispensable component of the interpretation of Christianity, equating it in importance with Scripture and Tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A response to the throwaway culture<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a world where \u201cuse and consumption have prevailed over conservation and respect,\u201d Leo XIV presents archaeology as \u00aba school of cultural sustainability and spiritual ecology.\u201c The Pope emphasizes that this discipline teaches that \u201deven the smallest testimony deserves attention,\" contrasting with the contemporary tendency to discard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe archaeologist does not discard anything, but rather preserves it. He does not consume, but rather contemplates. (Photo CNS\/Paul Haring).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tool for evangelism<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le\u00f3n XIV connects Christian archaeology with the evangelizing mission to the peripheries, both geographical and existential. The discipline can be \u201ca powerful instrument of dialogue,\u201d contributing to \u201cbuilding bridges between distant worlds, between different cultures, between generations.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pope quotes Francis\u201c words about the catacombs, where \u201deverything speaks of hope,\u201c recalling that these ancient places remain a living testimony that \u201dGod had truly entered history and that faith was not a philosophy, but a concrete path in the flesh of the world.\".<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A call for academic training<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The letter makes a specific appeal to bishops and those responsible for culture and education to \u201cencourage young people, lay people, and priests to study archaeology,\u201d highlighting the \u201cmany educational and professional opportunities\u201d it offers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leo XIV also emphasizes the importance of collaboration between the various Vatican institutions dedicated to archaeology: \u201cThe Pontifical Roman Academy of Archaeology, the Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archaeology, the Pontifical Academy Cultorum Martyrum, the Pontifical Institute of Christian Archaeology: each with its own specificity, all sharing the same mission.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Archeology as \u201cliving memory\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The document concludes with a reflection on the role of memory in times of rapid change. \u201cTrue Christian archaeology is not sterile conservation, but living memory,\u201d says Leo XIV. \u201cIt is the ability to make the past speak to the present. It is wisdom to discern what the Holy Spirit has brought forth in history.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the Pontiff, those who know their own history \u00abknow who they are, know where to go, know whose children they are and to what hope they are called.\u201d In this sense, Christian archaeology becomes \u201ca ministry of hope\u201d that shows how \u201cthe Gospel has always had a generative force.\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A legacy for the future<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With this apostolic letter, Leo XIV not only celebrates the centenary of an institution, but also redefines the role of Christian archaeology in the contemporary world. The discipline emerges not as a nostalgic exercise, but as a living tool for understanding the faith, theological formation, and evangelizing mission of the Church in the 21st century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The letter concludes with a blessing that encapsulates the spirit of the document: \u201cMay you be inspired by the light of the Holy Spirit, who is living memory and inexhaustible creativity.
