{"id":58571,"date":"2026-02-19T11:23:46","date_gmt":"2026-02-19T10:23:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/?p=58571"},"modified":"2026-02-19T11:23:46","modified_gmt":"2026-02-19T10:23:46","slug":"the-church-as-a-place-of-hope-and-diaconia-for-venezuela","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/en\/foco\/la-iglesia-lugar-de-esperanza-y-diaconia-para-venezuela\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cThe Church, a place of hope and true diakonia for Venezuela\u201d.\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the opinion of the Venezuelan priest Gustavo Jos\u00e9 Perozo P\u00e9rez, ordained in 2020 and incardinated in the diocese of Carora, in <a href=\"https:\/\/fundacioncarf.org\/iglesia-venezuela-sacerdote-formacion-nueva-fe\/\">statements<\/a> to the CARF Foundation: \u201cHope perseveres in the hearts of most Venezuelans\u201d. At present, Gustavo Jos\u00e9 Perozo is studying for a degree of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unav.edu\/web\/facultad-de-derecho-canonico\">Canon Law<\/a> in the ecclesiastical faculties of the University of Navarra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The priest grew up in an environment of faith in his native country, but his vocation did not arise in childhood. It was later, in his youth, when, through catechesis, his work as an altar boy, the parish, the closeness of some religious and the witness of the parish priest, when he began to consider his call to the priesthood. \u201cAll this awakened in me the search for something more,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And in 2012, at the age of 19, he left his university studies in Geography and History and entered the seminary. Eight years later he was ordained a priest. Today he assures that \u201cVenezuela needs well-trained canonists, and it needs them urgently\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Training for mission&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After being sent by his bishop to the Ecclesiastical Faculties of the University of Navarra, the young Father Gustavo considers that \u201cCanon Law contributes a lot to the mission of the Church, it is at its service. From this perspective, its contribution to the pastoral action of the Church in Venezuela is evident, and at the same time, the need for specialists in Canon Law in all branches, who can favor this service\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo build a society founded on justice, truth, liberty and fraternity, and thus emerge from the grave crisis that has afflicted the country for many years,\u201d encouraged Pope Leo XIV in his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/en\/news\/15-ideas-on-the-restriction-of-human-rights-and-freedoms\/\">Speech<\/a> to the Diplomatic Corps in January, referring to Venezuela and other countries. And \u201cCanon Law can contribute not only within the Church but also in the current complex socio-political situation,\u201d the Venezuelan priest stressed to the Diplomatic Corps in January. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/en\/focus\/carf-foundation-37-years-supporting-vocations-in-130-countries\/\">CARF<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Commitment of the Church in Venezuela<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a context of restriction of human rights and freedoms as denounced by Leo XIV, the action of the Church is not passive, but \u201cremains present and committed, trying to enlighten every reality with criteria and initiatives centered on the Gospel\u201d, adds the priest Gustavo Jos\u00e9 Perozo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his opinion, the most visible action is social work, especially through Caritas, with soup kitchens, medicine banks, nutrition programs, medical care and job training.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the Church's commitment goes beyond this: \u201cIn the midst of all the reality experienced and suffered, in each place and in different ways, the presence of the Church has been adapting to the needs, evangelizing and offering a response to each need that has arisen; all this, the fruit of a committed listening and a shared effort,\u201d he told the CARF Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Service profile: \u201ca diakonia\u201d.\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis service also has a profoundly social and political value thanks to the many pastoral agents who, with their dedication, availability, sensitivity, generosity and prayer, in a spirit of communion and charity, and from the Church's own institutions, are the hands and feet that bring, give, lift, carry and make possible, in short, that this service can be a sign of comfort and hope\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this way, he concludes: \u201cthe role of the Church transcends the intra-ecclesial sphere and becomes a true diakonia to the Venezuelan society\u201d. That is to say, a service carried out with dedication and love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Church that suffers with its people, but is hopeful<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Church in Venezuela is not an elite, it suffers the same reality as the rest of the citizens, and faces threats, limitations and consequences derived from the country's situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gustavo Jos\u00e9 Perozo acknowledges that the prevailing feeling today is uncertainty, both inside and outside. But there is something that has not been lost: \u201cHope perseveres in the hearts of most Venezuelans\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe road to the restoration of democratic institutions will be long,\u201d he says, \"but it is not impossible.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Awakening of faith&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His analysis also takes a positive approach.<strong> <\/strong>Far from a massive abandonment of the faith, in many communities one can perceive \u201ca new ardor, a reconfiguration of the experience of faith,\u201d even in the midst of hard difficulties.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are many young people who participate in retreats, movements and various charismatic experiences that bring them closer to the Church and then lead them to processes of accompaniment, maturation, commitment and apostolate,\u201d adds the Venezuelan priest.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As\u00ed se ha expresado el sacerdote venezolano Gustavo Jos\u00e9 Perozo P\u00e9rez, ordenado en 2020 e incardinado en la di\u00f3cesis de Carora, en declaraciones a la Fundaci\u00f3n CARF: \u201cLa esperanza persevera en los corazones de la mayor\u00eda de los venezolanos\u201d.
