{"id":58681,"date":"2026-02-23T13:34:13","date_gmt":"2026-02-23T12:34:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/?p=58681"},"modified":"2026-02-23T13:47:53","modified_gmt":"2026-02-23T12:47:53","slug":"pope-urges-not-to-use-ia-for-homilies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/en\/actualidad\/el-papa-insta-a-no-usar-ia-para-homilias\/","title":{"rendered":"Pope urges not to use AI for homilies or seek \u201clikes\u201d on TikTok"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">- Courtney Mares, Vatican City, OSV News<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a question-and-answer session with clergy from the Diocese of Rome, the Pope said priests should resist \u201cthe temptation to prepare homilies with artificial intelligence\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/en\/signatures\/tools-children-ia\/\">IA<\/a>), or to search for \u201clikes\u201d on social networking platforms such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/en\/news\/europa-tiktok-addictive-design\/\">TikTok<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLike all the muscles of the body, if we don't use them, if we don't move them, they die. The brain needs to be used, so our intelligence must also be exercised a little so as not to lose this capacity,\u201d Pope Leo said at the closed-door meeting, according to a Feb. 20 Vatican News report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo give a true homily is to share the faith,\u201d and artificial intelligence \u201cwill never be able to share the faith,\u201d the Pope added. The Pontiff has expressed interest in the topic of artificial intelligence and the dignity of work since the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/en\/news\/pope-rejects-idea-of-a-virtual-pope\/\">early days<\/a> of his pontificate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes, we can offer an inculturated service in the place, in the parish where we work,\u201d the Pope told the priests of the Diocese of Rome; \u201cpeople want to see your faith, your experience of having known and loved Jesus Christ.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Not to look for \u2018likes\u2019 <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his meeting with the clergy of Rome, Pope Leo stressed that with a \u201clife authentically rooted in the Lord\u201d one can offer something different, calling it \u201cillusion on the Internet, on TikTok\u201d, to think that one offers oneself and thus gains \u2018likes\u2019 and \u2018followers\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are not yourselves: if we do not transmit the message of Jesus Christ perhaps we are mistaken and we must reflect with great attention and humility on who we are and what we do,\u201d the Pope stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also added that for a priest \u201ca life of prayer\u201d is fundamental, adding that this means \u201ctime spent with the Lord,\u201d not \u201cthe routine of reciting the breviary as fast as possible.\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Papahomilia-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-58682\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Papahomilia-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Papahomilia-700x467.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Papahomilia-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Papahomilia-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Papahomilia-18x12.jpg 18w, https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Papahomilia-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Papahomilia.jpg 1170w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Pope Leo XIV delivered a homily during the Ash Wednesday Mass at the Basilica of Santa Sabina, Rome, on February 18, 2026. The following day, he urged priests not to use artificial intelligence to write their homilies or seek \u201clikes\u201d on social networks such as TikTok (CNS photo\/Lola Gomez).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pope Leo's advice to young priests<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pope's February 19 closed-door dialogue with the clergy of the Diocese of Rome was introduced by Cardinal Baldo Reina, Vicar General of Rome, who introduced four priests, representing four age groups, who were selected to ask the Pope a question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among them was a young priest, ordained by Pope Leo XIII last May. He asked how young priests can support their peers in today's world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pope urged them first of all to keep \u201ctheir eyes open\u201d to the families from which many young people come, who have often gone through \u201cvery serious crises\u201d, with absent parents or \u201cdivorced and remarried\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many young people have also experienced abandonment, so priests must know their reality, the Pope continued. \u201cBe close to them in this regard, accompany them, but do not be just young people,\u201d he said, adding that, in this regard, the witness of the priest is important, since he offers a model of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Seeking outreach initiatives<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pope also asked priests not to be content only with the young people who continue to come to the parish: \u201cWe must organize ourselves, think, look for initiatives that can be a form of rapprochement\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have to go ourselves, we have to invite other young people, go out on the street with them; maybe offer different outlets,\u201d activities such as sports, art and culture, he insisted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Knowing others is the key element, according to Pope Leo, and knowledge comes through \u201ca human experience of friendship\u201d with young people who \u201clive in isolation, in incredible loneliness.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Growing loneliness<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pope also highlighted how this loneliness has increased especially after the pandemic, in part due to the use of smartphones. \u201cThey live a kind of aloofness, a coldness, without knowing the richness, the value of truly human relationships,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this reason, he continued, we must know how to offer young people \u201canother type of experience of friendship, of sharing and gradually of communion\u201d, and from this experience \u201cinvite them to know Jesus\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pope Leo stressed that this requires \u201ctime\u201d and \u201csacrifice,\u201d considering also that many young people today are trapped in \u201ca terrible life\u201d of drugs, crime and violence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Priestly fraternity in Chicago<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pope Leo encouraged priests to cultivate true friendships among themselves and to resist the temptation of \u201cinvidia clericalis\u201d or clerical envy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let us not be afraid to knock on the door of others, to take the initiative, to say to colleagues or a group of friends: why don't we get together from time to time to study together, to reflect together, to have a moment of prayer and then a good lunch? The parish priest with the best cook can invite others, Pope Leo said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He recalled a \u00abbeautiful\u00bb example of priestly fraternity in Chicago, his hometown, where a group of priests decided to meet once a month since they were in the seminary. Some continued into their 90s, meeting for prayer and study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Witnessing life in the midst of euthanasia<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the question and answer session, Pope Leo also addressed the issue of euthanasia, stressing that priests \u201cmust be the first to bear witness that life has enormous value.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf we ourselves are so negative about our life, and sometimes with less suffering than many people endure, how can we say to them, \u201cNo, you cannot take your life, you must accept it?\u201d the Pope wondered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf one lives one's whole life as a journey that carries us forward, even with the weight of years, often also - being young or old - with illnesses and difficulties, one will have the ability, with God's grace, to accept the cross, the suffering that comes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Bringing communion to the sick<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pope also urged priests to bring Communion and the anointing of the sick to parishioners who are ill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cToday, with fewer priests and more elderly, the thinking is, \u2018Well, let's send the laity, they'll do it,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cIt's a beautiful service the laity provide ... but that doesn't mean the priest can stay at home looking at things on the Internet.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Courtney Mares is Vatican editor for OSV News.
