{"id":62774,"date":"2026-06-26T12:25:31","date_gmt":"2026-06-26T10:25:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/?p=62774"},"modified":"2026-06-26T12:25:33","modified_gmt":"2026-06-26T10:25:33","slug":"special-city-council-meeting-to-mark-the-inauguration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/en\/actualidad\/consistorio-extraordinario-inauguracion\/","title":{"rendered":"Le\u00f3n XIV Opens the Extraordinary Consistory with a Call for Synodality, Peace, and Mission"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the occasion of the opening of the Extraordinary City Council Meeting, to be held on June 26 and 27, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/en\/news\/free-ebook-leon-xiv-in-spain\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"62431\">Leo XIV<\/a> He presided over the working meetings and a Mass at the College of Cardinals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/leo-xiv\/es\/speeches\/2026\/giugno\/documents\/20260626-concistoro-straordinario.html\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/leo-xiv\/es\/speeches\/2026\/giugno\/documents\/20260626-concistoro-straordinario.html\">speech <\/a>During the opening prayer and the homily, the Pontiff urged cardinals from around the world to build a synodal Church, address international conflicts through justice, and strengthen the proclamation of the Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ecclesial Discernment<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his welcoming remarks, the Holy Father thanked the cardinals for their presence and reiterated the desire he expressed at the Consistory last January to \u00abwork together in the service of the Church\u00bb through \u00aba dialogue that will help me in serving the mission of the entire Church.\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le\u00f3n XIV emphasized that communion is not a final outcome, but rather a \u00abdaily conversion\u00bb that is built \u00abnot so much through words and documents, but through concrete actions and attitudes that must be evident in our daily lives, including in the workplace.\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also recalled that pastors are not \u00abguardians of particular interests,\u00bb but rather \u00abdisciples and witnesses of the Kingdom of God, called to be, in Christ, the leaven of universal brotherhood.\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Thematic Sessions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To guide the proceedings, the Pope has proposed four interconnected thematic sessions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reflections on Today's World: An Invitation to Contemplate Reality Through the Eyes of Faith. Recalling his homily in the Plaza de <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/en\/news\/mass-corpus-cibeles-mass-multitudinous-visit-pope\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"62031\">Cibeles <\/a>Speaking in Madrid on June 7, he recalled that \u00abJesus walks through the streets, crosses the squares, visits our neighborhoods, and dwells in the places of our daily lives\u2014as the God who is close to us and walks with his people, as the Lord of history.\u00bb.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Culture of Power and the Civilization of Love: a space for discernment regarding realities marked by war, violence, and polarization. To this end, the Pontiff has proposed his encyclical \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/leo-xiv\/es\/encyclicals\/documents\/20260515-magnifica-humanitas.html\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/leo-xiv\/es\/encyclicals\/documents\/20260515-magnifica-humanitas.html\">Magnifica humanitas<\/a>\u201d, expressing his interest in hearing how these passages are brought to life in the various local churches.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Building the Common Good: a session dedicated to exploring the Church\u2019s contribution in the face of the temptations of fragmentation. Drawing on paragraph 86 of the aforementioned encyclical, the Holy Father has emphasized the importance of a synodal approach characterized by \u00abtransparency, evaluation, and shared responsibility\u00bb in decision-making.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Implementation of the Synod: a section to coordinate preliminary reflections. The Pope has clarified that \u00absynodality is not primarily a set of procedures,\u00bb but rather \u00aban attitude, an openness, a willingness to understand.\u00bb Furthermore, he has refuted the notion that this approach implies a diminishment of authority, clarifying that it helps us understand authority as a service aimed at \u00abpreserving communion, fostering the participation of all, and guiding our shared journey.\u00bb.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, Leo XIV has asked the cardinals for their \u00abstrong, explicit, and public\u00bb support, calling on them to show \u00abfreedom,\u00bb \u00abfrankness,\u00bb and \u00abloyalty,\u00bb since \u00absincere counsel is always an act of communion.\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also encouraged those present to work with conviction within the established groups, acknowledging that, although this is not the usual format for a consistory, it is part of the shared learning process of synodality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The True Vine<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the Eucharistic celebration held at the tomb of St. Peter, as the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul approaches, the Pope outlined his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/leo-xiv\/es\/homilies\/2026\/documents\/20260626-messa-concistoro.html\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/leo-xiv\/es\/homilies\/2026\/documents\/20260626-messa-concistoro.html\">homily <\/a>centered on the Gospel image of the true vine. Drawing on the Holy Scriptures, the Pontiff has offered three fundamental guidelines to direct the deliberations of the College of Cardinals:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>True Freedom: Leo XIV explained that a relationship with Jesus Christ frees us from sin and fear, inspiring the bishops as successors of the apostles. He emphasized that \u00abthe living Church is the Church that believes\u00bb through the gift of the Holy Spirit, and he urged everyone to bear witness to this faith with enthusiasm among all nations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Key to Peace: In the face of the grave wounds caused by international tensions and conflicts, the Holy Father has condemned the use of force: \u00abWar is never worthy of man, and it will never be blessed by God,\u00bb noting that intelligence and will must prevail over high-tech weapons. He has defined peace as a duty of justice stemming from a single human family.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The timeless truths today: The Pope has noted that rapid cultural changes require us to express \u00abthe timeless truths in a language that allows us to perceive their enduring newness,\u00bb citing Pope Francis\u2019s apostolic exhortation *Evangelii gaudium*.
