{"id":62840,"date":"2026-06-30T10:30:29","date_gmt":"2026-06-30T08:30:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/?p=62840"},"modified":"2026-06-30T11:53:17","modified_gmt":"2026-06-30T09:53:17","slug":"letter-from-pope-leo-to-the-fraternity-of-st-pius-x","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/en\/actualidad\/carta-papa-leon-fraternidad-san-pio-x\/","title":{"rendered":"Leo XIV writes to the Priestly Fraternity of St. Pius X: \u00abWith a heavy heart, I feel it is my duty to ask you to abandon your plan.\u00bb"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pope <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/leo-xiv\/it\/events\/event.dir.html\/content\/vaticanevents\/it\/2026\/6\/30\/lettera-fraternita-sanpiox.html\">The Pontiff has sent a letter to Davide Pagliarani<\/a>, Superior General of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Pius X, in which, \u00abwith a heavy heart, yet still full of hope,\u00bb he asks the bishops, priests, seminarians, and faithful associated with this Fraternity to reconsider the \u00abschismatic act\u00bb that this institution would carry out through the episcopal consecrations without a papal mandate announced by the Fraternity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this letter, dated on the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, the Pope emphasizes that \u00abthe Church recognizes the commitment to liturgical life, the commitment to priestly formation, the apostolic zeal, and the desire for fidelity to Tradition that characterize many individuals and communities associated with that Fraternity.\u00bb. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This appreciation and esteem \u00abhas inspired the attitude of care and kindness that my predecessors have consistently shown you.\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Path of Dialogue and Understanding<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pope, who has emphasized from the beginning of his pontificate the value and importance of the Church\u2019s unity, while taking into account the diversity of her charisms, strongly urges the members of the Fraternity in this letter to reconsider this \u00abchallenge\u00bb issued to Rome, taking into account \u00abthe spiritual good of the faithful, for the schismatic act you would commit would deprive them of the lawful\u2014and, in some cases, even valid\u2014reception of the sacraments they love and seek for their sanctification.\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leo XIV\u2014\u00abWith a heavy heart, but still full of hope, I feel it is my duty to ask you to abandon your plan\u00bb\u2014made this final gesture of reconciliation just a few hours before the schism was consummated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pope has expressed the Church\u2019s willingness to \u00abembark on a path of dialogue and understanding that the Holy Spirit may make possible and fruitful,\u00bb with the aim of avoiding an act that would not only wound the Church but also set back this institution\u2019s talks and union with Rome. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Complex History: The FSSPX and the Holy See<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Relations between the Priestly Fraternity of St. Pius X and the Holy See have been marked by complexity practically from the very beginning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Born within the Catholic Church and founded by Marcel Lefebvre, the Priestly Fraternity of St. Pius X (FSSPX) was canonically established in 1970 in the Diocese of Fribourg. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shortly thereafter, its founder expressed his opposition to key tenets of the Second Vatican Council, not only regarding liturgy but also in other areas such as the concept of religious freedom, ecumenism, and collegiality as a form of governance in the Church. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1975, the Holy See withdrew its approval of the Society (which had been granted on a temporary basis for six years) and ordered Lefebvre to close the Society\u2019s seminary. Lefebvre did not close the seminary; instead, he even ordained a group of priests without authorization, which led to Marcel Lefebvre\u2019s suspension \u00aba divinis.\u00bb. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Relationship with John Paul II<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the pontificate of John Paul II, the ups and downs with the Fraternity continued. In 1984, the Congregation for Divine Worship published <em>Four Years Ago<strong> <\/strong><\/em>through which it permitted the celebration of Mass according to the Tridentine Rite, provided that \u00abit is unequivocally established that such priests and faithful do not associate with those who doubt the legitimacy and doctrinal correctness of the Roman Missal promulgated by Pope Paul VI in 1970\u201d (that is, they accept the legitimacy of the Novus Ordo Mass) and always with the approval of the diocesan bishop. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lef\u00e9bvre criticized this directive, although in the years that followed, he held several meetings and engaged in a series of overtures with the Holy See. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fact, in 1988, the talks seemed to have reached a point of understanding, but, surprisingly, one day before the signing that would have marked the Fraternity\u2019s return to the Church, its founder backed out and escalated tensions by announcing the episcopal ordination\u2014without an apostolic mandate\u2014of four of his followers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marcel Lefebvre died in 1991 without expressing his allegiance to the Holy See, despite the efforts of St. John Paul II. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Ecclesia Dei Commission<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That same year, 1988, the Holy See established the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/roman_curia\/congregations\/cfaith\/ced_documents\/rc_con_cfaith_20090930_ecclesia-dei_sp.html\">Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei,<\/a> \u201cwith the task of collaborating with the bishops, the dicasteries of the Roman Curia, and the relevant groups, to facilitate full ecclesial communion for priests, seminarians, communities, and men and women religious who until now were linked in various ways to the Fraternity founded by Archbishop Lefebvre and who wish to remain united to the Successor of Peter in the Catholic Church.\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through this initiative, various Lefebvrian groups entered into communion with the Catholic Church, such as the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter, the Institute of the Good Shepherd, and the Priestly Union of St. John Mary Vianney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Benedict XVI, in 2009, l<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/roman_curia\/congregations\/cbishops\/documents\/rc_con_cbishops_doc_20090121_remissione-scomunica_sp.html\">lifted the excommunication of these four bishops of the Fraternity<\/a> with the desire to \u00abstrengthen mutual trust and to deepen and stabilize the relationship between the Society of St. Pius X and the Apostolic See.\u00bb The Pope, who had led the unsuccessful talks with the founder until 1988, was encouraging, with this step, \u00abthe full communion of the entire Society of St. Pius X with the Church.\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/benedict-xvi\/es\/letters\/2009\/documents\/hf_ben-xvi_let_20090310_remissione-scomunica.html\">an explanatory letter addressed to the bishops, explaining this decision<\/a>, Benedict XVI also recalled that \u00abexcommunication affects individuals, not institutions. An episcopal ordination without papal mandate carries the risk of a schism, because it calls into question the unity of the episcopal college with the Pope.\u00bb Furthermore, the Pope explained that until \u00abthe Fraternity has a canonical status within the Church, its ministers do not exercise legitimate ministries within the Church either.\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although various attempts at rapprochement have been made over the years, the FSSPX\u2019s refusal to recognize the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the Magisterium of the Second Vatican Council, and the legitimacy of the Novus Ordo Mass has persisted throughout this period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stagnation and Rising Tensions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During Pope Francis\u2019s pontificate, the Pope recognized the validity of certain sacraments administered by priests of the Society (such as confessions and weddings), for the sake of the souls of the faithful. However, there has been no progress whatsoever\u2014quite the contrary\u2014in the FSSPX\u2019s acceptance of the Second Vatican Council. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2019, the Ecclesia Dei Commission was absorbed into the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, and Cardinal V\u00edctor Manuel Fern\u00e1ndez took over the leadership of the talks with the traditionalist group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Latest Disagreement and the Danger of a Schism<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The past few years have been particularly turbulent with regard to the relationship of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Pius X<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On February 12, 2026, following a meeting with the Superior General of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Pius X, the prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, Monsignor V\u00edctor Manuel Fern\u00e1ndez, proposed \u00aba specifically theological process of dialogue, with a well-defined methodology, on topics that have not yet been sufficiently clarified, such as: the difference between the act of faith and \u2018religious respect of the mind and will,\u2019 or the varying degrees of adherence required by the various texts of the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council and their interpretation.\u00bb. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The prefect also asked the Fraternity to suspend the episcopal ordinations announced on February 2, since this \u00abwould entail a decisive break in ecclesial communion (schism) with serious consequences for the Fraternity as a whole.\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pagliarani responded with a refusal, arguing \u00abthat we cannot reach an agreement on doctrine,\u00bb and maintained that the episcopal ordination was illicit. The Prefect for the Doctrine of the Faith recalled, in a brief <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/roman_curia\/congregations\/cfaith\/documents\/rc_ddf_doc_20260513_dichiarazione-fernandez-fsspx_sp.html\">press release dated May 13, 2026<\/a>, that the consummation of this unlawful ordination \u00abwill constitute a \u00abschismatic act\u00bb\u201d (John Paul II,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/john-paul-ii\/es\/motu_proprio\/documents\/hf_jp-ii_motu-proprio_02071988_ecclesia-dei.html\">Ecclesia Dei<\/a><\/em>, no. 3) and \u00abformal adherence to the schism constitutes a grave offense against God and entails excommunication\u00bb <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A situation that has continued to this day, in which the Pope has reached out \u00abat the last minute\u00bb to prevent a situation that would lead to a breakup <em>de facto<\/em> of ecclesial communion.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
