Today\u2019s Gospel passage reveals a side of Jesus that we are not accustomed to seeing. At first glance, it may surprise us and even baffle us. However, upon deeper reflection, we discover a valuable lesson about faith and about God\u2019s openness to all peoples, races, and nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Gospel recounts the test of a foreign woman\u2019s faith. It is as if Jesus were gradually raising the bar to see how far her faith could go. The scene resembles a high jump competition: every time the bar is raised, the athlete manages to clear the new height. That is precisely what happens in today\u2019s Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Three times the woman encounters what appears to be rejection. First, she is ignored. She respectfully pleads, \u201cHave mercy on me, Lord, Son of David. My daughter is possessed by a very evil demon.<\/em>\u201d. However, Jesus does not say a single word to her. Undeterred, she persists. Through the disciples\u2014who intercede on her behalf\u2014she continues to plead. But even their intervention receives another discouraging response: \u201cI have been sent only to the lost sheep of Israel<\/em>\".<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then comes the final test, the most difficult of all. Jesus says to him, \u201cIt's not right to take the children's bread and feed it to the puppies.<\/em>\u201d. Many would have walked away hurt and offended. But this woman refuses to give up. With admirable humility, she replies: \u201cYou're right, Sir; but even little dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table<\/em>\u201d. At that moment, she surpasses the highest standard. She has passed every test of faith. Her perseverance, humility, and trust win Christ\u2019s heart. Not only is her daughter healed, but she also receives one of the greatest compliments ever spoken by Jesus: \u201cWoman, how great is your faith!<\/em>\u201d. We see, then, that God is not indifferent to our needs or our pleas. The Gospel encourages us to continue asking with humility and perseverance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What makes this woman\u2019s faith even more impressive is that she is a foreigner: a Canaanite. Yet, through her faith, she ceases to be a stranger. It is interesting that the Canaanite woman remains anonymous. We do not know her name. We cannot call her by name as we do with Mary Magdalene, Martha, or Veronica. Yet it is precisely her anonymity that directs our attention to what truly matters: faith. She is remembered not for her social status or her achievements, but for her faith.
