There are days when the Lord doesn't enter our lives through the front door, but through a small office window, through an appointment that never materializes, or through a folder of documents that someone hands to us with more urgency than we expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A colleague was being assigned to the area with his family. He was facing the familiar burdens of moving with children: a new home, school, paperwork, and deadlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\"Antonio, would you mind giving me a hand with this?\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2014No, man. Of course not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I really meant it. Then the documents, authorizations, and instructions arrived. The favor began to take up an entire morning in my head. I went to the city hall website. The first available appointment was almost twenty days later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In between were my family vacation\u2014which I'd already paid for\u2014and the exhaustion of a long year. And my partner's voice echoed in my mind:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2014It just has to be done as soon as possible. Otherwise, the kids might not be able to start school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He didn't say anything offensive. But I felt as though a part of his urgency had just taken up residence in my home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I started doing the math. Comparing things. Defending myself on the inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u00abWhen I had to do it, I took action. I got on a plane, took care of the paperwork, and came back. I didn't burden anyone else with it.\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There was some truth to that thought, and it showed good judgment. It\u2019s easy to talk about friendship and service. Then a favor comes along that doesn\u2019t quite fit into one\u2019s schedule, and the true measure of the heart is revealed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A few days later, I went to City Hall. It wasn't my appointment. I went to explain the situation. At the entrance, an employee was assisting those who were arriving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2014Good morning. I'm in a bit of a bind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2014Go ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I told him the essentials: a colleague stationed in the area, several children, a school, and a deadline that could complicate everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The man listened without interrupting me. He looked at the screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2014I can't give you another appointment right now. But let me check. If there's an opening, I'll try to reschedule it for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2014I'd really appreciate it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\"I can't promise anything, but I'll take a look.\".<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And he said it in a way that made it easy to believe him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I left without having resolved anything. That man could have brushed me off with a \u00abYou\u2019ll just have to wait.\u00bb He would have been right. Instead, he paused and, for a few minutes, made someone else\u2019s problem his own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The mail arrived mid-morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The appointment was moved up a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I stared at the screen. I wasn't calculating the loss anymore. I was giving thanks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That's when I realized that I had gone to City Hall thinking I was doing a friend a favor, but the Lord had led me there to do something with me as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
First, he helped me see my shortcomings, my struggles, and my difficulty in loving when love disrupts the status quo. Then, through that employee\u2019s simple diligence, he showed me a concrete way to sanctify work. There were no religious words. Just a man doing what was before him well, with humanity and kindness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sometimes the communion of saints is like that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A concerned father asks for help, albeit imperfectly. A friend agrees, even if it takes some effort. A coworker listens for just one more minute. A family breathes a sigh of relief. And God, without making a sound, brings those small acts of faithfulness together to sustain us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I also began to view my partner more kindly. I had clearly seen what his request meant for me; I hadn\u2019t considered what the move meant for him in the same way. Children can make us pushy, clumsy, even intrusive. Not always out of selfishness, but out of love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That doesn\u2019t mean that charity requires living without order. My family, my rest, and my responsibilities mattered too. If it had been necessary, I could have set a limit. But there\u2019s a huge difference between setting a limit peacefully and setting it out of resentment. The problem wasn\u2019t just about managing things, but the hardness that had taken root inside me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Lord was gentle. He didn't lecture me from a distance. He let me observe a small scene: a folder, a scheduled appointment, an employee listening, an email that arrived mid-morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Perhaps holiness often begins this way: not when we do something heroic, but when we stop defending ourselves inwardly and allow a small setback to become an opportunity to love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That man doesn't know that the way he treated me helped me pray better, nor that his thoughtfulness made me see my friend in a different light. He'll probably never know. Perhaps many people pass through our lives this way: without knowing that they are instruments of grace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And perhaps we, too, can be like that\u2014even when our \u201cyes\u201d is tinged with weariness, calculation, or inner protest. God does not wait for the heart to be perfectly pure before working through it. Sometimes He purifies it as it moves forward, as it obeys, as it does the favor it didn\u2019t want to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the end, I found myself giving thanks for everything: for my friend, for my struggles, for that employee, and for the Lord, who remains determined to make us saints through the little things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
