{"id":63409,"date":"2026-07-29T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-07-29T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/?p=63409"},"modified":"2026-07-27T15:24:10","modified_gmt":"2026-07-27T13:24:10","slug":"surviving-letters-from-the-venezuela-earthquake","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/en\/actualidad\/cartas-supervivientes-terremoto-venezuela\/","title":{"rendered":"Journalists launch an initiative to deliver letters from survivors of the Venezuela earthquake to Pope Leo XIV"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u2013 OSV News \/ Junno Arocho Esteves<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the pontificate of St. Paul VI, journalists covering the Vatican have had the unique privilege of direct access to the Vicar of Christ at an altitude of 30,000 feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Continuing a tradition adopted by his predecessors, Pope Leo XIV makes a point of walking down the narrow aisle of the cabin and greeting the journalists one by one, exchanging handshakes, gifts, or personal letters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Pope Leo XIV embarks on his apostolic visit to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/en\/news\/leon-xiv-to-visit-france-in-september\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"61435\">France <\/a>In September, four Vatican journalists hope to take advantage of that brief moment to convey to the Pope the prayers, the suffering, and the fragile hopes of the people of Venezuela.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Venezuelan journalists Lola G\u00f3mez, Daniel C\u00e1ceres, and Jos\u00e9 Arnaldo Mujica, along with Costa Rican journalist Jovel \u00c1lvarez, launched \u201cLetters to the Pope,\u201d an initiative aimed at collecting letters from Venezuelans and rescue teams affected by the two earthquakes that devastated the country on June 24.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A way to support your homeland<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking to OSV News on July 23, G\u00f3mez, a Caracas-born photojournalist for Catholic News Service, said that she and her fellow journalists were looking for ways to support their homeland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen you\u2019re far from your home country, you feel like you have to do something,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd we thought, since we\u2019re here at the Vatican covering Pope Leo and we\u2019re going to have an apostolic trip in September, how about we launch a channel for Venezuelans who survived the earthquakes and for the people who helped rescue them?\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of dealing with complex email or snail mail setups, the journalists created a Google Form to offer a \u201csimpler\u201d way for Venezuelans to \u201cshare their feelings, thoughts, or questions\u201d\u2014as well as photos\u2014with the Pope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The form will accept submissions until August 15. The letters will be compiled into a single volume and presented to Pope Leo aboard the papal flight on September 25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Venezuelan officials, the death toll from the 7.2- and 7.5-magnitude earthquakes that struck the northern state of La Guaira has surpassed 5,300. Thousands of people remain homeless as humanitarian workers continue recovery efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Caritas Venezuela recently reported that the consumption of local aid is exceeding the amount received, which has prompted calls for financial donations to facilitate local purchases in response to changing needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Writing as a Way to Process Trauma<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">G\u00f3mez told OSV News that giving survivors and first responders the opportunity to write\u2014rather than send a video or audio message\u2014serves as a cathartic way for them to process the trauma they are currently experiencing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen you put your feelings and thoughts into words, it helps you process what you\u2019ve been through,\u201d he explained, adding that publishing a compiled volume will allow Pope Leo to read the texts \u201ceven on the plane if he has time.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWith letters, I think it\u2019s more intimate,\u201d he said. \u201cIt creates a private moment between the victims\u2014or the people who want to share their feelings\u2014and the Pope.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The response to the campaign has grown steadily, and as of July 23, the organizers had received dozens of letters from affected regions across Venezuela, according to G\u00f3mez. The initiative has sparked interest not only among local survivors but also among international emergency response teams deployed to the country following the disaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to his account, \u00c1lvarez was contacted directly by Costa Rican rescue workers who were on the ground in Venezuela to ask how they could submit their testimonies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe first call we received\u2026 Jovel, who is actually from Costa Rica, received a call from the Costa Rican rescue workers who had been working in Venezuela after the earthquakes,\u201d said G\u00f3mez, adding that the team expects the shipments to increase before the deadline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo we\u2019re expecting more letters, but so far we\u2019ve received 52 from all the areas of Venezuela that were affected,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although he emphasized that the initiative is a collective effort with his fellow journalists, G\u00f3mez said that on every papal trip, he \u201calways tries to bring Venezuela to the Pope,\u201d in the hope that the personal letters will bring his suffering compatriots closer to the pontiff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe want them to feel that they\u2019re not alone on this journey,\u201d G\u00f3mez said. \u201cFaith is very important for them to keep moving forward through this terrible ordeal they\u2019re going through as they rebuild their lives, and they shouldn\u2019t feel like they\u2019re going through it alone.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This news story was first published in English on OSV News.
