From August 3 to 8, 2027, millions of pilgrims are invited to participate in the first WYD held in Korea and the second in Asia, following Manila 1995.

The gathering, convened by the Pope, will have as its theme «Be of good cheer: I have overcome the world!» (Jn 16:33), a call for young people to live their faith with hope and to face the challenges of today’s world with courage.

Dates and Program

World Youth Day will be held from August 3 to 8, 2027, while the traditional «Days in the Dioceses» will take place from July 29 to August 2. During those days, pilgrims will stay with families and communities in Korea’s 15 dioceses, participating in parish and cultural activities before traveling to Seoul.

The closing Mass presided over by Pope Leo XIV is expected to draw about one million people.

A logo inspired by Korean tradition

The official logo, designed by Jin Su-hyeon, combines a cross with the Korean character «ieung» (ㅇ) in its center.

The red and blue brushstrokes represent, respectively, the martyrdom of Korean Christians and the energy of youth. The central circle symbolizes Christ’s victory, while the color black evokes the bright future that awaits young people.

In addition, the word «Seoul,» written in Hangul, visually forms the letters WYD (World Youth Day), linking Korean identity with the universal dimension of the gathering.

Five Saints to Guide Young People

The Local Organizing Committee has chosen five patron saints who represent different aspects of Christian life and will serve as role models during the spiritual preparation for the World Youth Day:

St. John Paul II, founder of World Youth Day.

Saint Andrew Kim Taegon and his fellow martyrs, symbols of the Korean Church.

Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini, patron saint of migrants.

Saint Josephine Bakhita, a witness to hope and freedom.

Saint Carlo Acutis, a role model for evangelization in the digital age.

The selection process included consultation with young Koreans, pastoral workers, and formators before the Organizing Committee made its final decision.

Three Special Moments with Pope Leo XIV

During the spring meeting of the U.S. bishops, held in June 2026, Paul Kyung Sang Lee, auxiliary bishop of Seoul and general coordinator of World Youth Day, announced that three special events with Pope Leo XIV are already planned:

an encounter with people facing difficult circumstances;

interfaith dialogue;

and a prayer for world peace.

The bishop recalled that, following the Korean War (1950–1953), «Korea was one of the poorest countries in the world. In 80 years, it went from devastation to renewal. Hardship did not have the final say. Hope can renew and heal a nation.».

According to estimates presented at that meeting, between 10,000 and 15,000 young Americans will take part in the pilgrimage.

South Korea, one of the lowest birth rates in the world

The choice of Seoul holds great significance for the Church in Asia. Although Catholics remain a minority in South Korea, the community has experienced steady growth over the past few decades. According to statistics published by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea, by the end of 2025, the country surpassed six million Catholics (6,006,832) for the first time—a figure six times higher than that recorded in 1975, when barely one million Koreans professed the Catholic faith.

This growth, however, is accompanied by significant pastoral challenges. The Korean Church is feeling the effects of the demographic crisis facing the country, whose fertility rate stood at 0.80 children per woman in 2025—one of the lowest in the world. The aging population is also reflected in the parishes: nearly three out of every ten Catholics (28.9 TP3T) are 65 years of age or older, making them the largest age group.

Religious practice has also declined over the past decade. Currently, only about 15 % of Catholics regularly attend Sunday Mass, compared to the 20.7 % recorded in 2015. Similarly, vocations to the priesthood and religious life continue to decline. In 2025, only 70 new priests were ordained, compared to 121 a decade earlier, while the number of seminarians and religious continued to fall.

An Opportunity for the Korean Church

Precisely because of this context, the Korean Church views World Youth Day 2027 as an opportunity to revitalize youth ministry. In 2022, the archbishop of the capital, Peter Soon-taick Chung, emphasized that the event could become «an excellent opportunity to bring young people together around a project that makes them protagonists» and a special occasion to share the values of the Gospel with Korean society.

The Church in Korea also has a unique history. Unlike in most countries, Catholicism took root through the initiative of laypeople, who learned about the faith through books from China and began forming Christian communities before the arrival of the first priests. Later, even at the risk of their lives, they crossed the border to bring in priests who could administer the sacraments. That nascent community was marked by the witness of thousands of martyrs—a legacy that continues to define the identity of the Korean Church and makes Seoul a particularly significant setting for hosting the upcoming World Youth Day.

La Jornada Mundial de la Juventud (JMJ) Seúl 2027 ya tiene fechas, lema, santos patronos y un programa que promete convertir a Corea del Sur en el centro de la Iglesia joven.
