{"id":63609,"date":"2026-08-09T06:40:00","date_gmt":"2026-08-09T04:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/?p=63609"},"modified":"2026-08-07T13:56:52","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T11:56:52","slug":"acutis-ai-this-is-how-leon-xiv-wants-us-to-experience-the-ai-revolution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/en\/foco\/acutis-ai-asi-quiere-leon-xiv-que-vivamos-la-revolucion-de-la-ia\/","title":{"rendered":"Acutis AI: This Is How Leo XIV Wants Us to Experience the AI Revolution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Artificial intelligence is rapidly bringing about the end of the world as we know it, but Pope Leo XIV has an urgent message for everyone: don't run away from the changes brought about by AI; instead, face them head-on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was just one of the conclusions reached at a conference held on August 1 at the St. John Paul II National Shrine in Washington, where the Pope\u2019s recent encyclical was discussed: \u00ab<a href=\"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/en\/news\/magnificent-humanitas\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"61613\">Magnifica Humanitas<\/a>: \u00bbOn the Protection of the Human Person in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.\u201d Peter Cooney, co-founder of the Acutis AI web platform\u2014named after St. Charles Acutis and designed as a Catholic alternative to conventional AI systems by offering answers based on Church teaching\u2014explained Pope Leo XIV\u2019s extensive document to the attendees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00abIt starts off strong: humanity faces a crucial decision. It gets right to the point. If you look at other encyclicals, they usually start off in a much gentler tone,\u00bb said Cooney, a 21-year-old senior majoring in economics at the University of Dallas. \u00abSo I think what Pope Leo is telling us is: this is important; listen up; pay attention.\u00bb And there are good reasons for that, given the speed at which AI is spreading into all areas of daily life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Unprecedented technology<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cooney noted that on November 30, 2022, the launch of ChatGPT, a generative AI chatbot, was announced on the social media platform Twitter, now known as X. Within five days, it already had more than one million users; now, less than four years later, it has more than one billion monthly active users. \u00abThis is the fastest-growing technology we\u2019ve ever seen in the world,\u00bb Cooney said. \u00abAnd I think there are some aspects of this technology worth highlighting that set it apart from those of the past.\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among those differences, he said, are the diversity of AI users (ranging from children to the military); the concentrated ownership of AI (Cooney estimated that fewer than 10 companies control 95% of the current market); and the competitive race for AI between the United States and China (with the goal of turning this powerful technology into a weapon). \u00abWhat we have is a handful of companies in two of the world\u2019s most powerful nations competing to create the most advanced AI models to gain a military advantage,\u00bb Cooney emphasized. \u00abAnd that same technology is present in the Chromebooks children use in their classrooms. This is the world the Holy Father is heading into.\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even so, the Catholic Church is not without answers. With this encyclical, Pope Leo XIV has \u00abestablished the Church as a moral authority on this issue,\u00bb Cooney said. \u00abWhich gives technology leaders good reasons to read the rest of what it has to say.\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Three Dangers of Artificial Intelligence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Cooney, the pontiff points out three particular dangers of AI: the ease with which results can be obtained; its appearance of objectivity where none actually exists; and its ability to simulate human communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While AI can be truly useful, \u00abif we stop thinking things through and simply delegate all of that to AI, we\u2019ll lose the ability to think,\u00bb Cooney suggested, \u00abwhich is a fundamental part of what makes us human.\u00bb He also confirmed that, when it comes to AI, \u00abevery response is based on probability. Basically, it\u2019s about doing mathematical calculations and finding the highest probability that the next word will be correct,\u00bb Cooney said. \u00abAI is not neutral.\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the subject of human communication, Cooney added, \u00abIf we\u2019re not careful, we may allow AI to gradually take away our human relationships\u2026 it can erode human relationships.\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What's at stake<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cooney noted that Pope Leo XIV asserts that these threats endanger truth, work, and freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Truth, because AI exacerbates the problem of misinformation through its ability to manipulate images or videos; work, because using AI to replace employees undermines their human dignity; and freedom, because it\u2019s easy to feel like you\u2019re making a choice when, in reality, your decisions are heavily influenced by AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, Cooney confirmed that Pope Leo remains hopeful. \u00abHe doesn\u2019t say we should hide from AI or run away from it. He acknowledges all the dangers and the state of confusion and fear that prevails in the world,\u00bb Cooney said. \u00abBut he calls on us to build. He says that, despite this downward spiral, we can also glimpse a large part of humanity striving\u2026 to build the holy city.\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don't run away\u2014build instead<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pope Leo XIV\u2019s exhortation, \u00abMagnifica Humanitas,\u00bb calling on people to embrace their role as disciples of Jesus Christ in an \u00abera of digital transformation,\u00bb is undoubtedly thought-provoking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00abLet us not be afraid to get our hands dirty in the \u00abwork in progress\u00bb of our time,\u00bb writes Pope Leo XIV in the encyclical. He urged people \u00abnot to be passive spectators of social and cultural divisions, nor mere commentators on what is falling apart, but men and women willing to enter into the works of history \u2014research laboratories, technology companies, schools, the media, institutions, and local communities\u2014to rebuild what has collapsed and protect what is under threat.\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Cooney, Pope Leo\u2019s call to the men and women of today \u00abis to build without fear, to protect our children, and to entrust everything to Mary.\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Disciples of Christ in the Digital Age<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response to Pope Leo\u2019s call, Cooney offered three personal suggestions. \u00abWe can\u2019t be afraid of AI. We have to learn how to use it\u2014and learn how to use it well,\u00bb he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also urged parents to \u00abtalk to their children and their schools to find out how AI is being used.
