{"id":63719,"date":"2026-08-12T12:17:30","date_gmt":"2026-08-12T10:17:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/?p=63719"},"modified":"2026-08-13T09:26:02","modified_gmt":"2026-08-13T07:26:02","slug":"pope-to-attend-sunday-mass","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/en\/actualidad\/papa-participar-domingo-misa\/","title":{"rendered":"Pope Leo XIV urges people to attend Mass on Sunday\u2014not just virtually"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before more than 5,000 faithful gathered in St. Peter's Basilica, Pope Leo XIV consecrated the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/leo-xiv\/it\/audiences\/2026\/documents\/20260812-udienza-generale.html\">Audience<\/a> on Wednesday, regarding the Liturgical Year, while commenting on the Second Vatican Council\u2019s constitution \u2018Sacrosanctum Concilium.\u2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his address in various languages, the Pontiff <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaticannews.va\/es\/papa\/news\/2026-08\/papa-catequesis-audiencia-general-ano-liturgico-misa-dominical.html\">has stated<\/a> that \u201ccelebrating the Eucharist is essential for sanctifying Sunday,\u201d since, according to the Council Fathers, listening to the Word and participating in the Body of Christ entails the festive gathering of the faithful.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his remarks to Portuguese-speaking pilgrims, for example, he encouraged them to \u201csanctify Sunday by participating in Holy Mass, not just by attending virtually\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This assembly \u201ccannot be replaced by a merely virtual presence, nor can it be reduced to a merely passive gathering,\u201d he noted. The liturgical assembly, in fact, takes place through the active participation of brothers and sisters, gathered together to \u201cgive thanks to God, who has brought them to new life through the living hope of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Foundation of the Liturgical Year: Sunday<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe liturgical year should be understood as a constant renewal of the work of salvation that Christ carries out throughout history. Throughout this annual cycle, the Church remains in touch with the Lord\u2019s redemptive action, so that the faithful may be filled with the grace of salvation.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leo XIV quoted Pope Pius XII in the encyclical <em>Mediator Dei<\/em>, when he wrote that the liturgical year \u201cis not a cold and lifeless representation\u201d of the past or the \u201crecreation of a reality from times gone by,\u201d but rather \u201cChrist himself who perseveres in his Church\u201d and continues his \u201cjourney of mercy\u201d so that \u201cthe souls of men may come into contact with his mysteries,\u201d which are present and constantly at work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pope went on to emphasize that the encounter with Jesus, who died and rose again for us, is the goal the Church pursues and the center of every celebration. The Council Fathers established Sunday\u2014the \u201cdies Domini,\u201d \u201cthe Lord\u2019s Day\u201d\u2014as the foundation of the liturgical year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">St. John Paul II taught in his Apostolic Letter *Dies Domini* that Sunday is the Lord\u2019s Day, the Church\u2019s Day, humanity\u2019s Day, and, finally, \u2018the day of days,\u2019 since Sunday is the weekly Easter.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEven in those languages where the reference to the \u2018day of the sun\u2019 has prevailed (<em>Sunday<\/em>, <em>Sunday<\/em>), one can glimpse the connection with Christ: \u00abChrist is the true \u00bbsun of righteousness\u2019 who enlightens every person!\u201d said the Pope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the beginning of his catechesis, Leo XIV recalled that the term \u201cliturgical year,\u201d used to describe the annual sequence of Christian celebrations, was introduced into the Church by the Servant of God, Abbot Prosper Gu\u00e9ranger (1805\u20131875), and since then, it has been defined and explained in the papal magisterium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Commemoration of Martyrs and Saints<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before concluding his catechesis, the Successor of Peter noted how each celebration has been added to the liturgical year, intertwining \u201cthe faith and devotion of the Church\u201d: the celebration of the weekly Passover since the second century A.D.; then the annual Easter, \u201cthe greatest solemnity\u201d; Pentecost 50 days later\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe subsequent development of the Christmas season, modeled after the Easter season, has allowed us to relive the mysteries of the Incarnation of the Word of God, of his birth, and of his manifestation to the world.\u201d. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similarly, the inclusion of the veneration of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the commemoration of the martyrs and the other saints. He noted that \u201cthe liturgical year thus represents, in a sacramental way, the teaching of the history of salvation, guiding the faithful from the expectation of the Messiah to the fullness of the Paschal Mystery and the anticipation of future glory.\u201d. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Assumption of the Virgin Mary, Saint Maximilian Kolbe<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his remarks to the Polish pilgrims, the Pope recalled the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which the Church celebrates on August 15, and the feast of St. Maximilian Kolbe on the eve of that day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAugust is a month filled with important anniversaries for you. Through Mary\u2019s intercession, victory was achieved on August 15, 1920, in the Battle of Warsaw, which changed the course of Polish and European history. On the Vigil of the Assumption, we celebrate the liturgical memorial of Saint Maximilian Maria Kolbe, who offered his life for a fellow prisoner in the German Nazi camp at Auschwitz. May the memory of these events guide us along the path of peace shown by the Immaculate Conception. My blessing to all!\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Solidarity with the people of Colombia<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Addressing the Spanish-speaking pilgrims, the Holy Father <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/en\/news\/the-pope-prays-for-the-victims-of-the-earthquake-in-colombia\/\">he reiterated<\/a> his \u201csolidarity with the Colombian men and women who suffered the effects of the recent earthquake, which caused numerous deaths and injuries, as well as extensive property damage. While I pray to the Lord for the eternal shame of sinners, I offer my prayers for their families and for all those affected by this tragedy. I express my gratitude to all those working on rescue efforts and providing assistance to the victims.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the final blessing, the Pope said, \u201cIn a few days we will celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. I am pleased to urge you to constantly direct your prayers to the Mother of God, following her example by fully embracing the vocation to closeness with the Lord and concern for others.
