There are little gestures that you hardly notice until, one day, they no longer seem normal. My oldest daughter has one. Before she takes a cookie at someone else\u2019s house, she always does the same thing: she looks up and searches for me with her eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He doesn't ask. He doesn't say, \u00abMay I?\u00bb He simply waits for that almost imperceptible nod from his mother or me across the table. Then he smiles. And he does it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For years, I thought that was a small educational victory. It never occurred to me that that very look might hide a question about me. Until this summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We spent a few days on vacation with another family. It only takes two or three days to realize that differences between parents arise where you least expect them: an ice cream before lunch, five more minutes in the pool, bedtime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That afternoon, one of the children asked for ice cream. His father said yes. A few seconds later, another child asked for exactly the same thing. His father said no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The children accepted the answer with admirable ease. The adults did not. For a few seconds, we stopped looking at the children and began looking at one another. No one argued. No one tried to convince anyone else. But we all compared ourselves to one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And then something happened that has stayed with me ever since. Someone opened a box of cookies. My daughter reached out her hand. Just before she touched the cookie, she looked up and searched for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She waited a second. Maybe two. I nodded. She smiled. By the time she picked up her cookie, another child had already grabbed two and was running toward the playground without even looking at an adult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And, for the first time in many years, I didn\u2019t feel proud. I felt a sense of doubt. And, for a moment, I wished my daughter had a little of that confidence. Not so she could disobey. Not so she would stop being who she is. Just so she could walk through the world with the peace of mind of someone who isn\u2019t afraid to make mistakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The thought vanished immediately. Or so I thought. Because it came back that night. And I couldn't shake it off for the entire trip home. The girls ended up falling asleep in the back seat. Teresa was driving. The radio was playing very quietly. For many kilometers, neither of us said a word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI can\u2019t get the look on that little girl\u2019s face out of my head\u2014the look she had right before she took the cookie,\u201d I said at last.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It took Teresa a few seconds to answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\"What's with that look?\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We remained silent. Sometimes I think that silence spoke louder than either of us. I\u2019ve read about overprotection, resilience, and autonomy. Useful words. None of them captures what I saw in that look. Because what I saw wasn\u2019t fear. It wasn\u2019t obedience. It wasn\u2019t submission. It was something older. It was a little girl who still believes her father has all the answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And I, who should have felt proud, could only feel fear. Fear that her trust was a trap. Fear that, by always agreeing, I was teaching her that you can only live in this world with permission. Afraid that one day, when I\u2019m no longer here, she\u2019ll keep waiting for a glance that will never come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There are nights when I go into their room before going to bed. Even though they each have their own bed, they almost always end up sleeping together, tangled up, as if the world ended in that room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As I watched them sleep, I thought that someday they would stop looking for me with their eyes. Not out of a lack of love. Not out of defiance. Because that\u2019s what growing up is: learning to walk without looking back. And I knew I couldn\u2019t protect them from that day. Nor should I.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I went in one night, before turning off the light. I watched them for a while without making a sound. I thought that, in a few years, probably none of them would want to sleep like that anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I felt a strange mix of sadness and peace. Because, in the end, the only thing I can offer them is this: a love that doesn\u2019t know if it\u2019s right, but that never stops trying. Someday they\u2019ll stop looking to me for guidance before making a decision. And on that day, I hope I\u2019ll have enough courage not to confuse their freedom with my defeat. And then, yes.
