{"id":63952,"date":"2026-08-26T12:06:41","date_gmt":"2026-08-26T10:06:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/?p=63952"},"modified":"2026-08-26T13:19:01","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T11:19:01","slug":"the-pope-rejects-liturgical-abuses-once-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/en\/actualidad\/el-papa-rechaza-de-nuevo-los-abusos-liturgicos\/","title":{"rendered":"The Pope Concludes the Liturgical Cycle and Once Again Condemns Abuse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Holy Father Leo XIV emphasized, in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/leo-xiv\/it\/audiences\/2026\/documents\/20260826-udienza-generale.html\">last catechesis<\/a> on the Constitution <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/hist_councils\/ii_vatican_council\/documents\/vat-ii_const_19631204_sacrosanctum-concilium_en.html\">Sacrosanctum Concilium<\/a>, two aspects: the need for more conscious and active participation by the faithful in the liturgy, a key reason for the liturgical reform carried out by the Second Vatican Council.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the rejection of \u201cthe abuses that have been documented in some sectors of the Church in the postconciliar period, and which, unfortunately, sometimes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/en\/resources-2\/why-the-pope-calls-for-respect-for-approved-texts-and-rites\/\">even today<\/a> \u201dare being tested, with some of the principles underlying the reform itself being taken to extremes or misunderstood.\".<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout his remarks and greetings addressed specifically to the pilgrims and faithful in various languages\u2014which were met with enthusiastic applause in St. Peter\u2019s Basilica\u2014the Pope highlighted key points of his message and recalled several holidays and events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The example of Saint Monica and Saint Augustine, yesterday and the day before<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, the liturgy commemorates two great saints tomorrow and the day after\u2014Saint Monica and Saint Augustine\u2014\u201cunited on earth by family ties and in heaven by the same destiny of glory.\u00a0 \u201dMay their example inspire in each of us a sincere and passionate search for the Truth of the Gospel, so that we may bear joyful witness to it in our daily lives,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Jasna G\u00f3ra, Poland: Human Life, Marriage, and Family<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pope Leo XIV has joined \u201cin spirit with those gathered in Cz\u0119stochowa, where today, 70 years later, the \u2018Jasna G\u00f3ra Vows of the Polish Nation\u2019\u2014drafted by Cardinal Stefan Wyszy\u0144ski during his captivity\u2014are being renewed. May the program for the moral renewal of society contained therein\u2014through the protection of human life, the care of marriage and the family, and the education of children and young people\u2014continue to inspire a commitment to justice and fraternity.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>St. Teresa of Jesus Jornet e Ibars, patron saint of the elderly, and directors of OMP<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He reminded the Spanish-speaking pilgrims that \u201ctoday we celebrate the feast day of Saint Teresa of Jesus Jornet e Ibars, a Spanish nun and patron saint of the elderly. Through her intercession, let us ask the Lord to bless all the elderly, as well as those who care for and accompany them\u201d\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pope extended a special greeting to the diocesan directors of the Pontifical Mission Societies and to those participating in summer gatherings for seminarians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As he greeted pilgrims from various countries, he made special mention of those from Malta, Senegal, and Canada, extending a special greeting, once again, to those who serve in the national offices of the Pontifical Mission Societies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Third letter from the then-Cardinal of Milan, later Pope Saint Paul VI, to his diocesan faithful<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Returning to the central theme of the catechesis on the Liturgy, the Holy Father took the time to explain the reasons why the Council Fathers sought to promote a reform of the liturgy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this regard, he cited and commented on the third letter from the Council that Cardinal Giovanni Battista Montini, then Archbishop of Milan, sent on October 28, 1962, to the faithful of his own diocese.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe liturgy,\u201d he wrote, \u201cis a sincere expression of both the divine and the human. It is language. It is a vehicle for divine teaching, on the one hand, and a voice for dialogue with God, on the other. It is clear that it cannot renounce its didactic function, nor can it fail to offer faith and piety the possibility of expressing themselves with spontaneous intelligibility,\u201d Leo XIV recalled.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Motivated by these convictions, \u201cthe future Pope Saint Paul VI affirmed that the faithful \u201ccannot and must not remain silent and passive. Their physical presence cannot be reconciled with their spiritual absence.\u201d\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cChristians should not witness this mystery of faith as strangers and silent spectators\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pontiff has stated that these declarations are clearly in line with those that will appear in No. 48 of the conciliar Constitution:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Church, with solicitous care, ensures that Christians do not participate in this mystery of faith as strangers and silent spectators, but rather, by fully understanding it through the rites and prayers, participate consciously, devoutly, and actively in the sacred celebration (\u2026)\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A renewed awareness of the value of the liturgy can be perceived in these words, the Successor of Peter has noted. \u201cThrough the Church\u2019s ritual actions, as the memorial of the work of salvation is celebrated, we are given the opportunity to experience a true relationship with God, entering into contact with the salvific event. Since the gestures and words of the sacred liturgy are essential to this experience, the participation of the faithful cannot be passive.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>One part that is unchanging, and other parts that are subject to change<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pope then pointed out that, as a living reality, the liturgy \u201chas always been subject to developments and changes over the centuries,\u201d and that the Second Vatican Council, \u201cwith the utmost respect for the heritage of tradition, and precisely in order to make it more accessible, deemed it necessary to revise the liturgical books.\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And as stated in No. 21 of the Constitution *Sacrosanctum Concilium*, \u201cthe Liturgy consists of a part that is immutable because it is a divine institution, and of other parts subject to change, which over time may or even must vary if elements have been introduced into them that do not correspond well to the intrinsic nature of the Liturgy itself or have become less appropriate.\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A liturgy that shines with its \u201cnoble simplicity\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Holy Father also quoted Pius XI, Pius XII, and St. John XXIII, and urged \u201cthe primary responsibility of pastors, of bishops, but also of each priest individually\u201d to \u201csafeguard and promote a liturgy that, while respecting liturgical norms, shines with noble simplicity (cf. no. 34) and thus manifests the one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic Church.\u00bb.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A liturgy of this kind will also be \u201ca fundamental means of evangelization, the instrument of grace through which, as the Council teaches, we can learn to offer ourselves and, through Christ, be perfected in unity with God and among ourselves (<em>see.<\/em>
