{"id":64299,"date":"2026-09-09T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-09-09T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/?p=64299"},"modified":"2026-09-09T10:26:17","modified_gmt":"2026-09-09T08:26:17","slug":"leon-xiv-1st-youth-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/en\/actualidad\/leon-xiv-i-jornada-de-la-juventud\/","title":{"rendered":"The Episcopal Conferences of West Africa Celebrate Their First Youth Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Youth Day, which will be held from September 7 to 11, 2026, in Accra, Ghana, is a historic event organized by the Episcopal Conferences of West Africa (RECOWA\/CERAO), modeled after World Youth Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In its <a href=\"https:\/\/recowanews.com\/message-video-du-saint-pere-leon-xiv-pour-les-journees-ouest-africaines-de-la-jeunesse-7-septembre-2026-12-septembre-2026\/\">video message<\/a>, in French and English, Leo XIV praises \u201cthis wonderful initiative\u201d by the Episcopal Conferences of West African countries, \u201cwhich have placed young people at the center of their pastoral priorities.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am convinced that these precious moments shared together, as the Holy Father tells you, \u201cwill help you grow in faith and be increasingly enriched by values such as connection and openness to others.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cPromoting positive change in our societies\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the central messages of the Pontiff, who made a lengthy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/en\/news\/missionaries-explain-popes-trip-to-africa\/\">pastoral visit<\/a> to four African countries (Algeria, the land of St. Augustine, Cameroon, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea), is his call to \u201cwalk together to bring about positive change in our societies. Walking together means ensuring that no one is marginalized, isolated, excluded, or rejected.\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this regard, Leo XIV encourages young people to \u201cbe builders of bridges between peoples, cultures, and religions.\u201d We must commit ourselves to living as Jesus, our Teacher and Lord, did\u2014he who excluded no one from his path. I know how much doubt, uncertainty, and, at times, insecurity can weigh on your shoulders and disrupt your plans for the future.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the Holy Father adds, \u201cYou are not young people who are being sacrificed, as many might think. In the Church\u2014the Family of God\u2014you are God\u2019s gift, the Church\u2019s gift. As Pope Benedict XVI said: \u201cYou are rich in qualities, energy, dreams, and hopes\u2014resources that you possess in abundance! Your youth is a great treasure not only for you, but also for others, for the Church, and for the world\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/benedict-xvi\/it\/messages\/youth\/documents\/hf_ben-xvi_mes_20100222_youth.html\">Message for the 25th World Youth Day<\/a>, \u201dFebruary 22, 2010).\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cI\u2019m counting on you, and I trust you.\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pope Leo then assures the youth of West Africa: \u201cDear young people, I am counting on you and I trust you; the Church trusts you. Through your words and actions, send a powerful message to our world, torn apart by wars and conflicts of every kind.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Abandon \u201cfictitious pleasures and superficiality\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBe witnesses of love, justice, and peace,\u201c adds the Pontiff. \u201dDo not sacrifice your precious youth on the altar of illusory pleasures and superficiality. Indeed, \u201cour deepest questions find neither a listening ear nor an answer in the endless scrolling through our cell phones, which captivate our attention but leave our minds weary and our hearts empty. They will not take us far if we keep them locked away within ourselves or within circles that are too narrow. Upon you, the clergy, and upon all who work with young people, I invoke an abundance of divine graces.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>An initiative by the region's bishops<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The initiative by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humandevelopment.va\/es\/news\/2026\/west-africa-youth-days-2026-ghana.html\">this Conference<\/a>, according to the Dicastery for Integral Human Development (DSDHI), \u201cit stems from the desire of the region\u2019s bishops to offer young Catholics a shared space for faith, fellowship, and formation.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The chosen theme, \u201cTake heart\u201d (Jn 16:33), serves as the central theme for the five-day event, which brings together numerous youth delegations from West Africa, along with bishops from the region, international guests, and official delegations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Burkina Faso proposed the meeting<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The idea for a gathering of Catholic youth from West Africa arose at the request of the young people themselves: Burkina Faso proposed the initiative as early as 2019, and the bishops gave their approval the following year, but the event had to be postponed due to the pandemic, explains the Dicastery<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fr. Vincent de Paul Boro, first deputy secretary of the <a href=\"https:\/\/es.frwiki.wiki\/wiki\/Conf%C3%A9rence_%C3%A9piscopale_r%C3%A9gionale_de_l%27Afrique_de_l%27Ouest#La_CERAOF\">CERAO<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaticannews.va\/fr\/eglise\/news\/2026-08\/accra-2026-faire-de-la-jeunesse-ouest-africaine-un-moteur-de-p.html\">explained<\/a> that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaticannews.va\/fr\/eglise\/news\/2026-08\/accra-2026-faire-de-la-jeunesse-ouest-africaine-un-moteur-de-p.html\">the meeting<\/a> It aims to be a \u201cprophetic sign\u201d for the region, capable of converting young people from <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%C3%81frica_Occidental\">16 countries<\/a> and from diverse cultures and languages, \u201cas leaders of a renewed youth ministry and as witnesses to unity on a continent marked by tensions.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Representing the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development (DSDHI), Fr.
