{"id":64487,"date":"2026-09-14T14:45:36","date_gmt":"2026-09-14T12:45:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/?p=64487"},"modified":"2026-09-14T14:46:20","modified_gmt":"2026-09-14T12:46:20","slug":"the-pope-raises-salaries-for-the-curia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/en\/actualidad\/el-papa-aumenta-los-salarios-de-la-curia\/","title":{"rendered":"The Pope Raises Curia Salaries by Reversing COVID-19 Pay Cuts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The wage restraint measures adopted by Pope Francis with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/francesco\/it\/motu_proprio\/documents\/papa-francesco-motu-proprio-20210323_decreto-retribuzioni.html\">Apostolic Letter \u00abA Sustainable Future,\u00bb March 23, 2021<\/a>, which were necessary to address the challenges posed by the pandemic, have been repealed by another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/leo-xiv\/it\/apost_letters\/documents\/20260901-abrogazione-un-futuro-sostenibile.html\">Apostolic Letter<\/a>, dated September 1, by Pope Leo XIV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consequently, the salaries of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/en\/news\/11-behind-the-scenes-features-of-the-first-papal-consistory\/\">cardinals<\/a>, heads and secretaries of Vatican dicasteries, as well as clergy and religious, in the same proportions as the reductions. In summary, a 10 percent reduction for cardinals, an 8 percent reduction for other superiors, and a 3 percent reduction for clergy and religious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Commitment to Ensuring Economic Sustainability<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pope adds in his Motu Proprio that the measures have already been partially amended, through the repeal of Article 3, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/romancuria\/it\/organismi-economici\/segreteria-per-leconomia\/documenti\/20250811-rescriptum-provvidenze-famiglia.html\">the Rescriptum ex Audientia dated June 16, 2025<\/a>. And he is \u201ccertain that the institutions of the Holy See and the Vatican City State will continue, through various means, to fulfill their commitment to ensuring economic sustainability.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The decision was made by the Holy Father after consulting with the Ministry of Economy and \u201ccarefully examining everything.\u201d The Pontiff is repealing the rule, although he is not eliminating the provisions that were in effect while the law was in force, including the freeze on biennial seniority raises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ministry of Economy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this reason, \u201cthe expert opinion of the Secretariat of Economy\u201d\u2014whose Prefect is the Spanish layman Maximino Caballero\u2014\u201cwas sought after carefully examining everything.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This measure is established without prejudice to the effects that occurred during its period of validity, including the effects resulting from the suspension of the accumulation of biennial seniority increases referred to in Article 5, which remains definitively acquired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pope Francis' Restrictions Lifted&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The restrictions adopted by Pope Francis were stringent and were due, in particular, to the consequences of the pandemic.
