{"id":64525,"date":"2026-09-16T12:21:24","date_gmt":"2026-09-16T10:21:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/?p=64525"},"modified":"2026-09-16T12:59:41","modified_gmt":"2026-09-16T10:59:41","slug":"the-pope-calls-for-respect-for-every-person","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/en\/actualidad\/el-papa-pide-respeto-a-toda-persona\/","title":{"rendered":"The Pope calls for respect for all people\u2014whether they are adversaries or simply different\u2014without discrimination"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wednesday\u2019s General Audience, which began with the Holy Father taking a brief tour in the popemobile to greet thousands of Romans and pilgrims gathered in St. Peter\u2019s Square, had a family-oriented atmosphere. Several readers in various languages congratulated the Pope on his birthday and on his name day tomorrow, Thursday the 17th, when the Church celebrates St. Robert Bellarmine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pilgrims from Nazareth, from Paris<\/strong>\u2026<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, while last Wednesday\u2019s event featured a Croatian translation, this time Slovak has been added. The Pope extended a special greeting to the group of pilgrims from Paris and to those from the Parish of the Annunciation in Nazareth.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also mentioned saints from other countries, such as Saint Stanislaus Kostka. \u201cI cordially greet the Poles, especially the pilgrims and seminarians from the Diocese of P\u0142ock, together with their bishop, who have followed in the footsteps of St. Stanislaus Kostka from Vienna, through Dillingen, to Rome.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn the year marking the third centenary of his canonization alongside Louis Gonzaga,\u201d said the Holy Father, \u201clet us not fail to pray for young people, so that, through the intercession of these patron saints, they may not be afraid to make courageous decisions in their lives, placing themselves at the service of God and their neighbor.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>One Human Family<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaticannews.va\/es\/papa\/news\/2026-09\/audiencia-general-el-papa-pide-no-delegar-decisiones-humanas.html\">catechesis<\/a>, the Pontiff continued his reflection on the Pastoral Constitution *Gaudium et spes*, saying: \u201cI would like to address the topic of the human community. The Council reminds us that God \u201cwilled that all people should form one family and treat one another as brothers and sisters\u201d (GS 24).\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Risk of Relying on Algorithms<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\"Technological development, the spread of the media and social media, and the ever-increasing use of artificial intelligence are opening up new possibilities, breaking down barriers and distances,\" the Pope continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the other hand, however, relationships tend to become less and less personal and more virtual, and \u201cthere is a risk of getting used to delegating to algorithms decisions that should be made solely by human conscience.\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this context, the Pope would later recall that \u201cthese days, many Latin American countries are celebrating their national holidays. Let us ask the Lord that, as we cherish the identity of our homeland, the Gospel may open our minds and hearts to recognize that we are part of a greater divine plan, that we are part of the human family created by God.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>May social relationships have personal depth<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With these premises in mind, the Holy Father emphasized: \u201cGiving social relationships real substance and personal depth is, in this sense, the contribution that the Christian community seeks to offer.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later, continuing with the topic of the son of the human family, Leo XIV recalled in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/leo-xiv\/es\/audiences\/2026\/documents\/20260916-udienza-generale.html\">the Audience<\/a> The teaching of *Gaudium et Spes*: The diversity of individuals and peoples throughout the world should not be viewed as a danger or a threat, but rather as a source of enrichment and growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Opening Up to Sharing and Caring<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is therefore necessary to \u201cbecome increasingly open to the logic of reciprocity, sharing, and care, just as is the case among the different members of the human body (cf. 1 Cor 12:21\u201325).\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, recalling the concise definition of the \u201ccommon good\u201d (\u201cconditions of social life that enable associations and each of their members to achieve their own perfection more fully and more easily\u201d), the Pope has emphasized certain \u201dpractical consequences of the utmost urgency.\u201c.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Respect for Human Dignity<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the first point that Leo XIV emphasized, according to *Gaudium et spes*: respect for the human person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2013 \u201cAnything that threatens life\u2014homicides of any kind, genocide, abortion, euthanasia, and even deliberate suicide\u201d;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"929\" src=\"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/20260915T0845-CHILD-IN-SURROGACY-YODER-1826258-1-1024x929.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-64527\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/20260915T0845-CHILD-IN-SURROGACY-YODER-1826258-1-1024x929.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/20260915T0845-CHILD-IN-SURROGACY-YODER-1826258-1-300x272.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/20260915T0845-CHILD-IN-SURROGACY-YODER-1826258-1-700x635.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/20260915T0845-CHILD-IN-SURROGACY-YODER-1826258-1-767x696.jpg 767w, https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/20260915T0845-CHILD-IN-SURROGACY-YODER-1826258-1-1536x1394.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/20260915T0845-CHILD-IN-SURROGACY-YODER-1826258-1-13x12.jpg 13w, https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/20260915T0845-CHILD-IN-SURROGACY-YODER-1826258-1-2048x1858.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.omnesmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/20260915T0845-CHILD-IN-SURROGACY-YODER-1826258-1-599x544.jpg 599w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Pope Leo XIV blesses a baby before his weekly general audience at St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican on August 19, 2026. (Photo by CNS\/Vatican Media).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;\u2013 \u201canything that violates the integrity of the human person, such as, for example, mutilation, mental or physical torture, and systematic attempts to control the minds of others\u201d;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2013\u201d anything that offends human dignity, such as subhuman living conditions, arbitrary detentions, deportations, slavery, prostitution, and the trafficking of women and young people; or degrading working conditions, which reduce the worker to the status of a mere instrument of profit, without respect for the freedom and responsibility of the human person: \u00bball these practices and others like them are in themselves shameful\u201d (ibid.).\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Respect for opponents and for those who think or act differently<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second consequence, the Pope has pointed out, is \u201crespect and love even for one\u2019s adversaries or for those whose ways of thinking and acting differ from one\u2019s own (cf. GS, 28).\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And third: the fundamental equality of all people, which demands social justice. The Document states: \u201cEvery form of discrimination against a person\u2019s fundamental rights\u2014whether social or cultural\u2014on the basis of sex, race, color, social status, language, or religion\u2014must be overcome and eliminated, as it is contrary to God\u2019s plan.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, as he noted in English, the Council Fathers urge us to overcome an individualistic mindset and adopt an attitude of responsibility and participation (cf. GS, 30\u201331).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Humanity is a \u201ccommunity of people\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dear brothers and sisters, as the Successor of Peter has concluded on this point, this vision of humanity as a \u201ccommunity of persons\u201d is a valuable legacy left to us by the Second Vatican Council.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Evaluate social and political projects based on human dignity&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This conception of the \u201chuman family\u201d and the \u201ccommunity of persons,\u201d \u201chelps all of us to engage in personal and communal discernment, so that we may responsibly evaluate today\u2019s social and political initiatives based on the criteria of human dignity, social justice, and free participation in building the common good,\u201d the Pope noted in his closing remarks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because, he concluded, the future of humanity \u201cdepends on each person\u2019s commitment to collaborate with God and with our brothers and sisters to build a more humane world (cf.
