For the sixth consecutive year, the March for Life was not permitted to gather in central Zurich. Instead, the event took place in Oerlikon, a commercial and residential district in the northern edge of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The march itself was authorized, but organizers were not given permission to hold the event in Zurich city centre. Municipal authorities have cited concerns about counter-demonstrations and public safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The organizers argue that the restrictions have an important consequence beyond simply changing the route. A demonstration in a busy city center can reach people who did not come specifically to attend it. Moving the event to the outskirts, they say, significantly reduces that public visibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Beatrice Gall, president of Marsch f\u00fcrs L\u00e4be, has gone on to explain that location matters because the purpose of the march is also to engage the wider public on abortion, pregnancy support, and family policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For the organizers, the events of September 19 therefore raise a question: if police can protect the march when counter-protesters attempt to disrupt it, should the possibility of such disruption determine where the march is allowed to take place?<\/p>\n\n\n\n The organizers describe the issue as more than a disagreement over permits. Gall has argued that repeatedly moving a peaceful demonstration because of the anticipated behavior of its opponents risks creating what is sometimes called a \u201checkler\u2019s veto.\u201d In this context, the concern is that opponents could influence whether a demonstration is permitted in a particular location simply by threatening to disrupt it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The organizers maintain that authorities should instead protect a lawful assembly while taking action against those who violate the law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They also point to what they see as unequal access to public space. According to the organizers, Zurich regularly hosts cultural events, political rallies, and other large demonstrations in central areas of the city. They argue that the March for Life should be subject to the same general standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The issue has now become the subject of a formal legal challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The organizers of Marsch f\u00fcrs L\u00e4be have launched legal proceedings against the city's restrictions and started a public petition calling for a change in the permitting policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The petition calls on Zurich Security Director Karin Rykart to restore equal access to central public spaces, apply consistent standards to groups seeking to organize public demonstrations, and uphold the right to peaceful assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The organizers also point to European Court of Human Rights jurisprudence concerning peaceful assemblies. Their position is that authorities have a responsibility to protect peaceful demonstrations, including those that are controversial or likely to attract opposition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Their legal argument does not deny that public authorities have to consider security. Rather, they question whether the expected reaction of opponents should be sufficient reason to restrict the peaceful gathering itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The events in Oerlikon have given the organizers a concrete example for that argument: despite attempts to obstruct the march, police were able to intervene, clear the route, and allow the march to continue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jonas Streule, regional director of ProLife Europe in Switzerland, told Omnes that the public perception of the Swiss pro-life movement can sometimes be shaped by short and confrontational videos on social media. He said his organization's university outreach takes a different approach, focusing on direct conversations with students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Streule described discussing abortion \u201cface to face, in a loving way,\u201d while still addressing the subject clearly. Struele noticed that they were \u201cobviously uncomfortable\u201d and \u201cdid not take part in the screaming.\u201d Remembering their earlier peaceful conversation, he felt that the encounter with ProLife Europe had made a difference. \u201cI could tell that for those two, learning about us calmed their hearts,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m 100% sure their hearts were changed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n For Streule, conversations like these are an important way to move beyond online polarization and engage young people directly about abortion, pregnancy, family life, and human dignity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That approach also explains why organizers place such importance on public demonstrations. They see the march not only as an event for people who already support the pro-life position, but as an opportunity for encounters with the wider public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The organizers want the March for Life to return to central Zurich and argue that peaceful assemblies should not lose access to public spaces because opponents threaten disruption. City authorities continue to cite public safety concerns in determining where the event can take place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The legal proceedings will now address that disagreement.
