Leo XIV has accepted, due to age limit, the resignation of Archbishop Adolfo Tito Yllana and has appointed in his place Archbishop Giorgio Lingua as apostolic nuncio to Israel and apostolic delegate to Jerusalem and Palestine, according to the official communiqué released by the Vatican.

Until now, Giorgio Lingua has been titular archbishop of Tuscania and apostolic nuncio to Croatia. In addition, he was nuncio to Iraq and Jordan and later to Cuba, before taking over Croatia.

What does this change mean?

Lingua's appointment does not change the doctrinal position or the diplomatic line of the Holy See with respect to Jerusalem and the defense of Christian communities, although it could have an impact on the form of dialogue and the effectiveness of daily negotiations with different interlocutors.

Yllana had spent years in a position marked by recurrent friction over holy places, permits and the treatment of Christian communities. His departure, therefore, is not a simple rotation; it closes one stage and opens another with a different profile, but with the same underlying challenge. His resignation due to age and immediate appointment indicates an orderly transition, with which Rome seeks continuity and experience.

With this change, the Holy See is betting on an experienced diplomat to maintain a representation that, in the current context, is increasingly conditioned by international tensions, security challenges and the daily life - precarious - of Israel's Christian communities.
