This year, 2026, marks the 100th anniversary of Domund, and the celebration is already underway. The Pontifical Mission Societies are preparing this year’s campaign, which will be held for the 100th time on October 18. The Pope has chosen “One in Christ, United in Mission” as the theme for this conference, as you can see on its Message Throughout September and October, OMP It will provide updates on various initiatives proposed to celebrate this occasion throughout Spain.
For now, OMP is paying tribute to this century of missionary work (1926–2026) in this innovative website featuring a highly visual, interactive journey through the 100-year history of Domund in Spain (photographs, videos, collection boxes, etc.) and through the mission territories (comparative statistics, infographics, etc.).
Although we will look at this in more detail later, this Domund Day has significantly advanced evangelization—the Church’s mission—in the following ways: on each of the 36,500 days of this century, an average of 9,000 Catholics have been baptized, three schools and one parish have been built… and many more initiatives have taken place.
Leaders in generosity, in financial contributions, and in sending missionaries
“Do you remember when you used to go out as a child to collect money for the missions?” asks OMP Spain. Do you remember the collection boxes, the posters, the gatherings, the movies?… It was in 1926 when Pope Pius XI asked the entire Church to dedicate the second-to-last Sunday in October to praying for the Church’s mission work in mission territories and to supporting it through Pontifical Mission Societies (OMP).
The goal was to remind all the baptized each year of the call to support evangelization to the ends of the earth.
In Spain, they recall, the Pope’s invitation was taken to heart, and every year conferences, testimonials in schools, and videos were organized… “All of this sparked a missionary spirit in our country that has led to Spaniards today being leaders ”in generosity, both in terms of money and missionaries.".
A Special Website
To mark the 100th anniversary of Domund, as noted above, the Pontifical Mission Societies has delved into its historical archives and is sharing them on a special website domund100.es
The website is divided into three sections and aims to provide an interactive overview of this missionary journey.
The first part, “100 Years with You”, focuses on Domund in Spain and features historical photographs of the various initiatives associated with this event that are sure to stir up nostalgia for many.
The website explains the origins of this event, displays historical posters organized by year, and highlights the iconic Domund collection boxes… Among many other features, visitors can watch the missionary films produced by OMP, starring actors such as Fernando Fernán Gómez and Sara Montiel.
Fruits of World Mission Sunday: 9,000 Catholics, 3 schools, 2 priests… every day, for 100 years
Through World Mission Sunday, Pope Pius XI called on all Catholics to support evangelization in mission territories—those dioceses that were under the jurisdiction of the historic Propaganda Fide. (now the Dicastery for Evangelization).
In the second part of the special website “100 Years for Them”, OMP shares the fruits of its missionary work.
Following a thorough analysis of data from the Pontifical Yearbooks of 1925, 1950, 1975, 2000, and 2025, this presentation offers maps and interactive infographics that provide insight into the scope of evangelization over the past century, during which the number of missionary dioceses has quadrupled, and on average, every day for the past 100 years, 9,000 new Catholics have been baptized, 2 priests have been ordained, 5 nuns have been consecrated, and 1 parish and 3 schools have been built.

On the website, you can see how, 100 years ago, evangelization was entrusted to religious institutes and congregations; and how, in recent years, the Church has taken root, giving rise to the 1,132 dioceses that exist today—which, having been founded by missionaries, continue to need the support of the entire Church. An interactive world map illustrates the missionary ‘boom’ of the past century, with exponential growth in the number of dioceses and Catholics.
An example: the evolution of Nakuru (Kenya)
The website cites one of these dioceses as an example of what is happening simultaneously across all mission territories. Specifically, it highlights the development of Nakuru (Kenya), where support from Domund has made it possible, year after year, to build up the local Church (convents, parishes, formation of catechists and vocations, schools…). It also features previously unpublished black-and-white photos of missionaries who brought the Gospel to all five continents under conditions far more challenging than those of today.
Missionaries Commemorate World Mission Sunday
In the last section of the website, “100 Years for Him”, Spanish missionaries fondly recall, according to OMP Spain, how this day has accompanied them over the years. Thanks to Domund, many of them discovered their vocation, or have found in financial support and prayer the strength to carry on with their mission. The day concludes with the Domund prayer, proposed by Pope Leo XIV.
